Energy Efficiency Fair to provide money-saving tips - Business ...

BILOXI -- Shoppers who are at Edgewater Mall buying tax-free back-to-school clothes on Saturday also can pick up ideas for saving money on electricity at the Energy Efficiency Fair.

Set up in front of Dillard?s, the fair is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and hosted by Mississippi Power. It will feature tips for saving energy and money through home improvement, lighting, products and services.

The fair also will have giveaways for children, who can generate their own energy on Mississippi Power?s Green Machine bicycle.

?We?re looking for a fun, interactive day at Edgewater Mall,? said Frank Magee, Mississippi Power senior marketing analyst for energy efficiency.

Also participating is Coast Electric Power Association, which will provide information about programs available to their customers.

The fair is one of 100 events nationwide selected by Energy Star for the Energy Stars Across America campaign that teaches the public to be more energy-efficient and protect the climate. Representatives from Sears will discuss the latest Energy Star appliances and new technologies such as heat pump water heaters.

Pearl River Valley Opportunity will share information about federal energy programs that are available to consumers, including the Federal Weatherization Assistance Program geared toward the elderly, disabled and lower income families with children. The goal of the program is to assist those who qualify to make their homes more energy efficient by making minor energy improvements.

?We typically experience our highest demand for energy in the summer months,? Magee said, ?and this year is no different. So it?s important to ready yourself with energy-efficiency knowledge so you can keep your energy consumption down.?

FTSE closes lower on flat US data (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? Stocks in London closed lower Friday in the wake of official data from the US which showed the world's largest economy had stagnated in the last six months.

A flood of terrible numbers on gross domestic product (GDP) growth from the Commerce Department initially sent US stocks into a tailspin. The Dow index plunged more than 100 points in early trade but later pared losses.

In London, the FTSE 100 index of top shares was down 0.99 percent at 5,815.19 points.

Lloyds was the most traded stock of the day with 256 million shares changing hands, followed by the Lloyds Banking Group (LBG), which saw 150 million shares switching owners.

Vodafone was the best blue-chip performer, rising 3.99 percent -- 6.6 pence -- to finish at 172, followed by education and publishing group Pearson, which rose 3.07 percent -- 35 pence -- to close at 1,174.

LBG led the fallers, slipping 3.67 percent -- 1.65 pence -- to close at 43.35, followed by diversified miner Anglo American, which was down 3.27 percent -- 98 pence -- to finish at 2,900.

On the currency markets, a pound was worth 1.645 dollars at 1605 GMT, down from 1.633 at the same time Thursday, while the euro stood at 1.143, up from 1.142 over the same period..

Nigerian top Muslim leader says sect not behind all violence (AFP)

KANO, Nigeria (AFP) ? Nigeria's top Muslim leader has urged authorities to stop blaming an Islamist sect for all violence in the country's northeast, hit by scores of recent bomb attacks, and pursue those responsible.

Sultan of Sokoto Sa'ad Abubakar also criticised a deployment of troops to the region, with soldiers accused of brutal raids that have allegedly left dozens of people dead and houses burnt.

"Most of the crises in the northeast are not caused by Boko Haram sect, so we have to ask ourselves, 'Why is there violence in the northeast? Who are those behind them?'," the sultan said late Thursday.

"The government must fish them out and tell us those responsible for the crises. This thing did not start today. Stop blaming every violence on Boko Haram," the spiritual leader of Nigeria's Muslims told other clerics in the northern city of Kaduna.

Nigeria's northeast, particularly the city of Maiduguri, has seen almost daily bomb blasts and shootings in recent weeks blamed on the sect known as Boko Haram.

There has been intense speculation over whether some of the violence has been politically linked, as well as the sect's source of support and financing.

The sect has claimed to be fighting for the establishment of an Islamic state in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation of 150 million people split roughly in half between Christians and Muslims.

Hundreds of troops have been deployed to Maiduguri to deal with the violence and have in turn been accused of serious abuses.

"If members of Boko Haram are known, then what is the best way to solve the problem? The problem cannot be solved by violence. The problems cannot be solved by drafting soldiers to cities where there is (a) problem," he said.

Boko Haram launched an uprising in 2009 put down by a brutal military assault that left hundreds dead.

It seemed to reemerge last year with shootings by gunmen on motorcycles of police, soldiers, politicians and community leaders.

Bomb blasts have become more common in recent months, with most occurring in Maiduguri, though an explosion ripped through a car park at police headquarters in the capital Abuja last month and several blasts have occurred in Suleija, near the capital.

Meanwhile, a statement distributed to a number of journalists allegedly from the sect has called on authorities in Kano, northern Nigeria's largest state, to release its members from custody.

"This ugly attitude must be checked and stopped with immediate effect and all those arrested should be released immediately," the statement addressed to the state governor said.

"Otherwise... we may be forced to deploy our men to your state and make it worse than Maiduguri."

Both the state government and police denied knowledge of the letter.

Rookies: Get Them While They are Hot ? Fantasy Sports Gab

As each season progresses, some players go down with injuries, others struggle, and some emerge as stars. Sometimes those ?some? that emerge are rookies called up mid-season. We saw a few who were called up during the 2010 season that really excelled: Stephen Strasburg (14 K in MLB debut), Mike Stanton (22 HR in 100 GP), and Buster Posey (NL Rookie of the Year). Almost all owners have to deal with an injury or a player that struggles, so they are forced to turn elsewhere for production. We have already seen many rookies called up early in the season succeed: Dustin Ackley, Anthony Rizzo, and Eric Homser. There are situations where a rookie may be a very useful to your team. Below is a list of 5 prospects who have recently got the call, or who are going to waiting for the call, that you should give some thought for now and the very near future.

1. Desmond Jennings OF, Tampa Bay Rays- Jennings is being named as the guy to replace Carl Crawford in Tampa. That is a lot of pressure to put on youngster, especially since those are some big shoes to fill. However, if Tampa asks Jennings to produce the type of numbers Crawford is producing in Boston, he shouldn?t have too much trouble with that. Jennings, in the minors, hit very well with a line of .275BA/12HR/17SB/68R. Jennings is a good guy to grab if you have a spot open in your outfield.
2. Mike Trout OF, Los Angeles Angels- Trout has been in the big leagues for a couple weeks, but he is still something to talk about. At 19, he is the youngest player in the majors. He is also the top prospect in baseball. His numbers in the minors (.324 BA/68 R/94 H/28 SB) were much better than his numbers so far in the pros(.167 BA/1 HR), but he is still an excellent option, especially as a future star. So if you are in a keeper league or already looking forward to next year because of a poor start, Trout is somebody to add to your list of guys to watch.
3. Jason Kipnis 2B, Cleveland Indians- The Indians are starting to slide a little too far in the standings, so the Kipnis call up will be vital for their chances in the division. Kipnis is a talented young hitter who brings a fresh look to the Indians ball club. The Grady Sizemore injury (that?s said too much nowadays) has put Cleveland in search for a bat to help their ever-struggling offense. After having a no-no thrown against them, it is time to get answers. Kipnis? minor league numbers were very good before his call, hitting .279BA/12HR/55 RBI/15 2B. Give him a look if, like the other two, you want somebody different on your team.
4. Brett Lawrie 3B, Toronto Blue Jays- Lawrie has been a force in the minors, giving the Blue Jays some hope for the future. His line is a very impressive, posting .358 BA/22 2B/59 R/5 HR. The Blue Jays are once again out of the race because of a competitive division, Lawrie could see some time in the majors. Keep a close eye because if he gets his shot this year, he will be another prospect worth watching.
5. Julio Teheran P, Atlanta Braves- Teheran has been called for a couple spot starts so far this season, but he has not gotten the call officially to stay. The roster expansion in September could Teheran?s next shot in the majors, but if not, he should get his shot in 2012. His numbers in the minors have impressive, going 11-1, with a 1.67 ERA, 98 K, and a 8.2 K/9 IP. Keep an eye on him, because when he gets his shot, he will be a must-have prospect.

My company matched up to 4% of my salary. Due to the economy they stopped doing it. I make $113,000 a year. I am contributing 8% of my salary.
My wife and I make way too much to contribute to a Roth IRA. We our debt free except for our Mortgage.
What should I do?
1. Stop investing in the 401K and open up a mutual fund (which gives me the option to invest in whatever I chose)?
2. Increase my contributions to make up for the company loss?

Dow Chemical 2Q profit surges 73 percent (AP)

MIDLAND, Mich. ? Dow Chemical Co. said Wednesday that its second-quarter profit surged 73 percent on a combination of higher prices, increasing sales and comparison to results a year-ago weighed down by one-time charges.

The company also said it predicts continued growth in major markets like the U.S. and Europe, despite what it calls the "somewhat uneven and jagged pace" of economic recovery. The statement echoed similar outlooks this week by major companies including United Parcel Service Inc.

Dow Chemical is a bellwether of economic health because of its diverse array of customers, including manufacturers of toys, automobiles, farming equipment and LCD televisions.

Its latest results beat Wall Street estimates. But Dow shares slipped 86 cents to close at $34.99 Wednesday as the broader market pulled back.

The Midland, Mich., manufacturer said its net income in the April-to-June quarter rose to $982 million, or 84 cents per share. That's up from $566 million, or 50 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 18 percent to $16.05 billion from $13.62 billion a year ago. Sales volume overall was up 9 percent from a year earlier and prices were 19 percent higher.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet Research predicted earnings of 79 cents a share on revenue of $14.75 billion.

Sales in its biggest segment, plastics, rose 9 percent to $3.27 billion. Sales of performance products rose 15 percent to $3.16 billion.

Dow Chemical has adopted a strategy of moving away from its basic plastics business and toward specialty materials acquired in the 2009 purchase of Rohm and Haas. Specialty materials are used in a range of products, including consumer electronics such as LCD televisions and smartphones and performance-related products.

Netflix, DreamWorks Animation Reportedly Near Streaming Pact | The ...

DreamWorks Animation and Netflix are nearing a streaming pact which would give the subscription giant digital access to the studio's film catalogue, Bloomberg reports.

Spokespeople for Netflix and DreamWorks Animation declined to comment.?

The deal with Netflix would replace a distribution pact that DreamWorks Animation currently has with HBO. That deal ends in 2014.?

An announcement may happen this week and could be pegged to both companies' quarterly earnings announcements.?

It would also be a piece of good news for the two companies, after a period of bad publicity. Netflix has been slammed by customers after it announced two weeks ago that it would hike the price of its most popular subscription plan by nearly 60 percent.?

For its part, DreamWorks Animation's share price has dropped nearly 30 percent this year as DVD sales have plummeted and films such as "MegaMind" have underperformed at the box office.?

"I really believe that we do not have to make a choice between fiscal discipline and national security," said Panetta, the former CIA director. "By setting priorities based on sound strategy, based on good policy, we can focus ... those resources we need at those threats of today and tomorrow."

With President Barack Obama and lawmakers on Capitol Hill locked in talks aimed at bringing Washington's trillion-dollar deficits under control, officials at the Pentagon are bracing for huge cuts in defense spending over the next decade.

Lawmakers seeking to influence a budget-cutting deal ahead of an August 2 deadline for raising the U.S. debt limit have floated proposals that could lead to defense spending cuts of $800 billion or even $1 trillion.

Some of the cutbacks being discussed could include a reduction in the number of U.S. troops as well as changes in the military's healthcare or retirement systems.

In speeches and interviews this week, Obama, Panetta's boss, reiterated his willingness to cut defense spending.

He told National Public Radio in an interview taped Thursday that protecting domestic programs for the vulnerable was a priority. "So a lot of the spending cuts that we're making should be around areas like defense spending, as opposed to food stamps," Obama said.

On Friday, Obama, who asked the Pentagon earlier this year to come up with $400 billion in spending reductions over the next 12 years, reiterated his willingness to cut defense by "hundreds of billions of dollars" as part of a balanced deal to reduce the deficit.

Panetta, who served as former President Bill Clinton's budget director, said the Pentagon had to "continue to be accountable to the American people for what we spend, where we spend it and what the results are."

"But I am confident ... that we can do this in a way that will strengthen us for the future, that will make us more effective, more efficient and that will not break faith with the men and women who serve this country," he said.

In sometimes emotional remarks, he echoed his predecessor, Gates, in promising to be "a tireless advocate" for service members and their families and to ensure U.S. forces have "what they need to accomplish their mission."

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? A Spanish collector plans to auction what he claims is a newly discovered 8-mm version of a film purportedly showing Marilyn Monroe having sex when she was still an underage actress known as Norma Jean Baker.

A Marilyn Monroe expert, however, says the actress in the film is someone else, considerably heavier and less feminine than the legendary film star.

"That's not Marilyn. The chin is not the same, the lips are not the same, the teeth are not the same," said Scott Fortner, who has a sizeable collection of Monroe memorabilia, including a belt he said proves how much more petite she was. "Marilyn was a tiny little thing. And I know that for a fact. I own her clothing."

Collector Mikel Barsa said in an interview Wednesday that he wants at least $500,000 for the sexually explicit 6 1/2-minute, grainy black-and-white film, which he says was made before 1947, when Monroe was not yet 21.

He said it's an exact copy of a 16-mm film discovered more than a decade ago. Barsa brokered a sale of that film to a European magazine in 1997, which he said in turn sold some 600,000 copies before a collector bought the original 16-mm reel for $1.2 million. Copies of that version are still circulating on the Internet.

"People with romantic notions have denied that it's Marilyn Monroe, and have invented stories" to raise doubts about the film, Barsa said in his Buenos Aires office, which is lined with pictures from his days as a concert promoter. "This film shows the real Marilyn Monroe ? it was only later that the studios discovered her and transformed her."

The face of the woman in the film looks considerably different from the Monroe who emerged later as a star, but more similar to the Monroe seen in one of her first movies, 1949's "Love Happy," which shows the actress before she lost weight, added a beauty spot on her left cheek and became one of Hollywood's most enduring stars.

Barsa said he has no idea how the two original copies ended up in the hands of the people who sought his help selling them, and he refused to identify any of the principals involved. He said that in the 1940s, sex films were often made using side-by-side 16-mm and 8-mm cameras, since audiences used both formats.

The collector said that Mark Roesler of Indianapolis-based CMG Worldwide, which has managed the image and estate of Monroe, threatened to sue after the earlier version surfaced in 1997. Barsa said nothing ever came of it after the owners offered to sell the film to CMG.

Roesler didn't respond Wednesday to two emails and a phone call requesting comment.

Barsa says he plans to auction the film himself Aug. 7 at a memorabilia collectors fair that he has organized in Buenos Aires, and is hoping for publicity similar to the scandal he generated when he screened the 16-mm version at a similar fair in Madrid in 1997. News coverage of his auction is already creating another buzz on the Internet.

His part of the deal is a 10 percent sales commission, he said.

A variety of sexually explicit films and pictures have been attributed to Monroe over the years, fostering a long and unresolved debate.

"In the Marilyn community, people have debated this for years and years and for the most part it's widely believed that this is not her," Fortner said.

Still, even Fortner said Monroe's image changed considerably as she became a star ? that she had some plastic surgery, learned how to hold her face differently in modeling school and adopted a mole on her left cheek. "I actually think it moved from time to time," Fortner said.

Monroe died of an overdose of sleeping pills in 1962 at 36.

Obama urges compromise, 'shared sacrifice' for debt deal (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? Insisting he is "willing to compromise," President Barack Obama called on US lawmakers Saturday to quickly forge a deal that would avert an early August debt default by the world's richest nation.

Obama has warned of economic "Armageddon" should Congress fail to raise the debt limit to allow more US borrowing, with his administration highlighting disastrous ripple effects that would churn through the global financial system.

But after five straight days of crisis talks ended Thursday without a clear solution, by the weekend Obama was imploring his fellow Democrats and opposition Republicans to engage in "shared sacrifice" to help break a stalemate that has led ratings agencies and top US lender China to sound the alarm over US credit worthiness.

"I'm willing to compromise. I'm willing to do what it takes to solve this problem, even if it's not politically popular," Obama said in his weekly radio address.

"And I expect leaders in Congress to show that same willingness to compromise," he added.

"Simply put, it will take a balanced approach, shared sacrifice, and a willingness to make unpopular choices on all our parts."

On Friday he said he had given top lawmakers 24 to 36 hours to talk to their rank and file and return to him with a viable plan. That time window essentially ends mid-day Saturday.

The US government reached its debt limit of $14.29 trillion in May, and since then the Treasury Department has used special measures to allow the government to keep paying its bills.

But unless the limit is raised by August 2, the Treasury says, growing spending and debt service commitments will force a default.

On Friday, Obama renewed his call for a "grand bargain" which would cut domestic entitlement programs dear to Democrats.

"And it means taking on the tax code, and cutting out certain tax breaks and deductions for the wealthiest Americans," said Obama, although Republicans have flatly rejected his call for higher taxes on the rich.

The president, sure to be judged in the 2012 elections based on his handling of the jobs-poor US economy, also signaled he would not reject a last-minute compromise key lawmakers were drafting behind closed doors.

Economists and finance and business leaders have warned that failure to raise the US debt ceiling by August 2 could send shock waves through a world economy still reeling from the 2008 collapse.

Ratings agencies Moody's and Standard & Poor's have warned they may downgrade Washington's sterling Triple-A debt rating, and leading US creditor China, Wall Street titan JPMorgan Chase and the Federal Reserve have also sounded the alarm.

With the United States "running out of time," as Obama put it, his top Republican foes in Congress called for votes next week on their plan for severe spending cuts on the way to amending the US Constitution to require cash-strapped Washington to balance its budget.

"Our jobs crisis and national debt require real action. So now the debate will move from a room in the White House to the House and Senate floors," said Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

"It's time for the Democrats to get serious as well. We asked the president to lead. We asked him to put forward a plan -- not a speech, a real plan -- and he hasn't. We will," said Republican House Speaker John Boehner.

The long-shot Republican plan, all but certain to fail in the Democratic-led Senate, pleased conservative lawmakers close to the "Tea Party" movement that fiercely opposes raising the debt limit and seeks deep spending cuts.

In his Friday remarks, the president left open the door to a "fall-back position" being crafted by McConnell and Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that would pair spending cuts with a debt limit increase, but called it the "least attractive option" apart from default.

That measure, described by aides who warned it was still in flux, would include some $1.5 trillion in spending cuts but would essentially let Obama raise the debt ceiling with only Democratic support in Congress.

Republicans have argued that tax hikes Obama wants would smother investment that feeds job growth at a time when the US economy faces stubbornly high unemployment of 9.2 percent.
