Sacred Piercing offers body art at convenient location | The Gannon ...

Ever since the studio opened its doors four years ago, Gannon University students have been flocking to Sacred Piercing for all their needled needs.

But what keeps students coming back?

For one thing, Sacred Piercing is conveniently located near campus at 253 W. Eighth St., about a block and a half west of the Palumbo Academic Center. It is the closest body modification location to campus, but that?s certainly not the only reason students enjoy the studio.

Getting pierced, especially at Sacred Piercing, doesn?t have to be the budget-kill many people assume it to be. The studio offers a selection of jewelry to choose from when getting pierced so customers have an option as to how much money they want to spend. Plus, Gannon students get an extra 10 percent off their purchase when they show their Gannon ID, and the studio also provides birthday discounts.

Most importantly though, as owner and piercer Missy Twohig said, she only pierces with high quality jewelry, which comes with a lifetime guarantee. This means that new piercings shouldn?t have to be taken out due to an allergic reaction to the metal, and the jewelry you?re pierced with will last the entire life of the piercing.

Junior physician assistant major Molly Martin said she has gone to Sacred Piercing several times and always enjoyed the experience with Twohig.

?I felt very at ease and comfortable and confident in her skills and level of sterilization,? she said.

Twohig prides her business on the amount of skill and experience she holds as a piercing artist. Though she has been in business at the current location for about four years, she said she has been piercing for 10 years.

She said what ultimately made her to decide to go into piercing was getting pierced herself. She said she had a bad experience, and she was determined not to let other people endure what she did.

She said she sat on the idea for a few years as she tried out college and then traveled for a while, but it was always in the back of her mind. Then, she said, the opportunity of an apprenticeship in Erie fell into her lap, and she couldn?t pass it up.

She spent six months at the apprenticeship, although she said generally it should be longer, before she got to work. After working as a piercer for a while, she went to an intensive ? a class at which the students study one particular art ? at Fakir Intensives in San Francisco, where she learned more about the art of piercing.

After her humble beginnings, Twohig opened up Sacred Piercing four years ago as her own business. She has attended conferences for the Association of Professional Piercers (APP) ? an organization under which she has been certified ? and she went back to San Francisco for another intensive with Fakir.

Martin said both Twohig and her sister, Ashley Bagci ? who works at the desk and creates henna tattoos ? are very professional and nice, and the environment of the studio is a must-see with a clean and comfortable setting.

When you walk in to Sacred Piercing, one of the first things you will notice is a naturally clean aroma ? it smells like someone has taken care to sterilize the environment to ensure the best piercing experience possible.

Straight through the door is a station that offers tea, coffee, hot chocolate cold drinks and snacks for the customers and their friends waiting for their appointments. To the left, at the end of the room, sits the broad jewelry counter with examples of pretty much anything you could want.

In the middle of the room is a sitting area with some chairs, a couch and a coffee table that houses albums with photos of the various piercings offered. One of the albums also holds Twohig?s various certificates that label her as a member of APP and as a certified piercing artist.

The sign-in counter is just to the left of the sitting area. This is where Ashley Bagci sits, ready to greet customers and make them comfortable until Twohig is ready for their appointments.

Local art that?s available for purchase covers the walls of the sitting area, and rock music plays in the background. There?s also a case of local authors and music near the jewelry case for the customers? perusal.

Twohig said the atmosphere of Sacred Piercing is her No. 1 concern. She said it?s important for customers to feel comfortable. ?I want you to be as relaxed as possible,? she said.

When customers are relaxed, she said, the whole process will flow better. She said most people are freaked out when they come in to get a piercing done, but that 99 percent of the time it goes really well.

Twohig takes great care to ensure that her customers are educated and relaxed about their piercings before she even pulls out her tools.

She takes them into the piercing room, which is off of a hallway behind the jewelry counter. The customer sits on a black massage table up against one of the purple walls, and ocean noises play in the background. No noise from outside or even the sitting area can be heard.

Twohig takes the art of piercing very seriously, she said, because she realizes the amount of trust that goes into it. She said it?s a big deal to trust someone to pierce you, because it can be an intimate experience. She likes to build that trust from the start, instead of just assuming it.

The first thing she does is ask if the customer has any questions about his or her piercing. She said when she asks for questions, the customer usually breathes a sigh of relief. They understand then that it?s not just an in and out experience, but that great care will be taken to make it a good one.

Martin, who has gotten her rook, tragus and two dermal anchors in her hips done at Sacred Piercing, said she would recommend the studio to Gannon students. ?I have ? obviously ? had good experiences and gone back,? she said.

She said her roommate, Melissa Hanigosky, recently got her nose pierced there at her recommendation and enjoyed the experience.

Barbara Townsend, an instructor in Gannon?s psychology department, said it?s obvious that students have been getting braver with piercings over the years. ?I don?t know when the tipping point was,? she said, but she acknowledged nevertheless that it has happened.

She said it started out with regular ear piercings and then moved on to multiple ear piercings, but now it seems as if more and more students are pierced in areas other than their ears.

Townsend said that she doesn?t personally find the piercings aversive, but she can see why young people like to get them done. She described them as a ?personal statement that you enjoy.? She said that this very much fits into the phase of life where people want to establish their identities, and piercing is a way for them to do that.

Townsend said part of the reason she doesn?t mind piercings is that they?re not permanent. You can always take them out when you grow older, if you don?t want them anymore.

Twohig also said that removability is an advantage to piercings, versus other forms of body modification such as tattoos or branding. She said that while they can have similar meanings associated with them, some people prefer to go with piercing as a less permanent form of body art.

Twohig also commented on the concept of tattoo and piercing facilities being linked together much of the time. She said she worked at a combination tattoo and piercing studio when she first started out, but it wasn?t the kind of atmosphere she envisioned.

She was looking for something more like what she has now ? a calming atmosphere that allows customers to relax. Tattoo studios stereotypically play loud music and provide no real relaxation for the nervous customers.

Her main goal, she said, is to show Erie that that Sacred Piercing specializes in body piercing, which is a major reason she chose not to offer tattoos as a part of her business. To specialize in this one art ? though Sacred Piercing does offer branding, henna tattoos and massage therapy as well ? makes it that much more special for the customer.

?The act of piercing,? she said, ?is a sacred thing.?

ASUS TOUGH 7-inch Honeycomb tablet lands in Japan ready for some corporate abuse

Not content with offering up merely modular Android tablets, ASUS has revealed a new seven-inch tablet that's water and dust resistant -- perfect for a spot of bath-time browsing or... desert rallying. The ASUS TOUGH-ETBW11AA has a rubberized bezel and strips across the back, contributing to the substantial 22.2mm profile, but that hefty frame can survive drops from the heady height of 76cm. Aside from its tough-guy credentials, there's a 1280 x 800 screen, five megapixel camera, Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz processor, WiMAX connection and the staple WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS medley. It comes with 16GB of well-protected storage, but there's room for more via microSD. For those seeking a slate that'll survive the bumps and scrapes of the business world -- and not look ridiculous -- it'll be available to enterprise customers of Japanese carrier KDDI this November. No news yet on whether it'll canoe its way across from the Land of the Rising Sun, but we can give you a few more photos of the rough and tumble tablet after the break.

Taiwan's Soong: Beijing does not want me to run (AP)

TAIPEI, Taiwan ? A China-friendly Taiwanese presidential candidate has been quoted as saying Beijing opposes his candidacy because it fears it could dig into support for President Ma Ying-jeou, Beijing's widely presumed favorite.

The statement was attributed to veteran Taiwanese politician James Soong, and published Monday in an interview with Next Magazine. A Soong spokesman said that Beijing "disagreed with Soong's candidacy" in the Jan. 14 elections but would not elaborate.

Soong left Ma's Nationalist Party to run as an independent in the presidential elections in 2000. The split cost the Nationalists the election and thrust a pro-independence figure into power ? much to Beijing's chagrin.

Analysis: Looming changes roil municipal bond market (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Change is coming to the U.S. municipal bond market, and issuers, bankers and others are worried that some of the moves could fundamentally alter the process for financing capital and operating needs.

Regulators, armed with new powers under the Dodd-Frank Act, are pushing for greater financial disclosures by states, cities and other issuers, while redefining responsibilities of key players in the market.

At the same time, the core of the market -- tax-exempt debt -- is under siege.

"Unless the municipal market is strong and people feel confident (in it), state and local governments are not going to be able to finance their needs," said Richard Ravitch, who along with former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, is heading a task force on the state budget crisis.

With more than $1 trillion in federal spending on the chopping block and possible changes in the federal tax code looming to deal with the U.S. deficit crisis, Ravitch, New York's former lieutenant governor, told the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association's Municipal Bond Summit on Tuesday he has not seen any analysis of how these moves would affect the state and local government sector.

Meanwhile, the American Jobs Act of 2011, which President Barack Obama unveiled earlier this month, targets annual incomes over $200,000 for individuals and over $250,000 for families by limiting tax deductions to 28 percent of their income starting January 1, 2013, from the current 35 percent.

Panelists at the SIFMA summit said the limitation would cause yields on tax-exempt bonds to rise, boosting borrowing costs for states, cities, schools and others in the $3.7 trillion municipal bond market, where wealthy investors have traditionally turned to reduce their taxable income.

George Friedlander, Citi's senior muni bond strategist, called the proposal, "an awful idea," even though he said it was extremely unlikely the bill would pass.

"It's an early warning," he said. "It is now on the list and once it's on the list, it won't go away."

Securities and Exchange Commissioner Elisse Walter told the SIFMA audience that regulatory staff was preparing rules to improve the timeliness and quality of issuer disclosures.

ADVICE AND CONSENT

Also roiling the market is the SEC's new oversight of issuers' financial advisers.

Issuers and banks alike have worried that the definition of who is a financial adviser that the SEC is considering may be too broad, forcing people with little involvement in a bond sale to answer to a host of new regulations. A strict definition, too, could shrink the pool of underwriters who also serve as advisers.

For example, Carol Kostik, New York City's deputy comptroller for public finance and a SIFMA panelist, said fewer broker-dealers than normal applied during a recent request for proposals process for advisers.

Ken Gibbs, president of the municipal securities group at Jefferies & Co, said the bond underwriting process may be transformed because advice is an "integral part of underwriting services."

"Every time you discussed the structure of an escrow or some other topic, you would be deemed an adviser," he told the SIFMA summit.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy also sounded a warning, pointing out debate about issues that have spooked investors, such as allowing states to file for bankruptcy, may continue to pop up in Washington.

"I want to argue here we need to be vigilant," he said, adding that the average citizen does not understand the municipal market.

Protect Assets From Nursing Home Medicaid Spend Down | latest ...

At Commonwealth Advisory Group, we are experts in interpreting and implementing Medicare and MA Medicaid regulations. The Medicaid application is lengthy and cumbersome. Most people are unfamiliar with MA nursing home Medicaid regulations and the recent regulatory changes associated with them. We?ll help you with all of the steps and paperwork. Protecting your assets is complicated, but we help make it simple.

Careful planning, whether in advance or in immediate response to someone needing nursing home care can help protect your estate, whether for your spouse, or for your children and loved ones. Our mission is to help seniors and their families protect their assets. Following are the most common question asked:

Can?t I just put my money into a Trust?

Some believe that asset protection can be achieved by putting everything into a revocable trust. Not true. All monies in revocable trusts are deemed available for nursing home care and are not protected.

I have been told that once you are in a nursing home, it is too late to plan.

It?s absolutely not too late! There are ways to safeguard a lifetime of savings and property, even if someone is already privately paying in a nursing home.

The state and federal government have written regulations, which govern how to protect your life savings when faced with this situation. The majority of professionals are unfamiliar with these regulations and the recent changes associated with them allowing for asset protection.

We are experts in the interpretation and implementation of these regulations, and can help you save your assets.

Can I get assistance in financing long-term care?

Unless long-term care insurance was previously purchased, few options are available to assist in financing nursing home care. The majority of individuals in this situation turn to Medicaid. Even if someone is currently privately paying for their care in a nursing home it?s not to late to protect assets. We are experts in the interpretation and implementation of these regulations. Call us at 800-705-1415 to schedule your consultation.

Preplanning is an important action to assure that assets are protected. If someone is not currently in a nursing home, pre-planning can be done to be sure their home and life savings are protected if nursing home is needed in the future. Based upon newly signed federal regulations, preplanning must be done properly. We are experts in the interpretation and implementation of these regulations. We can help! By not taking the proper steps to protect your life savings, home, jointly held property, gifted assets, retirement accounts, bank accounts, securities or mutual funds, savings bonds and insurance policies, all will be used to pay for nursing home care.

Applying for Medicaid is so confusing. Is there anyone I can turn to for help?

The Medicaid application process is lengthy and cumbersome. Most people are unfamiliar with Medicaid regulations and the recent regulatory changes associated with them. As a result, some nursing homes contract with private companies to prepare Medicaid applications for residents.

Be aware that these companies generally represent the nursing home or hospital, NOT the Medicaid applicant or his/her family.

If excess assets are available, the company will inform the nursing home and families will be expected to continue paying the facility with these assets. We are here to help you protect your assets. You provide us the documentation. We do all of the paperwork and we?ll help you maneuver through the Medicaid red tape.

Will my loved one be treated differently if on Medicaid?

No. Studies have shown that all nursing home residents are treated the same. If Medicaid recipients were discriminated against by being treated differently, the nursing home would be legally liable.

At Commonwealth Advisory Group, we are experts in MA Medicaid Spend Down planning to save on nursing home medicaid costs. Commonwealth Advisory Group has helped families to protect assets prior to admission to a nursing home medicaid, and when a loved one has already been admitted to a Massachusetts Medicaid nursing home. We are Massachusetts leading Senior Asset Protection Planning and Massachusetts Medicaid planning consultants. Commonwealth Advisory Group specializes in helping Massachusetts elders and their families protect assets from Massachusetts Medicaid nursing home spend down. Please visit www.commadvisory.com for more details

Android powered 56 percent of smartphones sold in the last three months

Nielsen survey
When last we checked in with Nielsen (which was earlier this month) Google's mobile OS had a sizable lead, powering just under 42-percent of smartphones sold, while Apple had cornered a more than respectable 28-percent of the market. In the few short weeks since, Android has seen its share grow to 43-percent. More interestingly, of the over 25,500 surveyed who had purchased a smartphone in the last three months, a whopping 56-percent chose to go with the Goog. Apple held a steady 28-percent across the board. Big G's gains came at the expense of RIM (only 9-percent of phones sold in the last three months were BlackBerries) and the ambiguous "other" (Symbian, Windows Phone 7, Bada, MeeGo, etc... accounted for 6-percent of sales). More important than choice of platform though, is that smartphone sales in general are climbing -- accounting for 58-percent of all handsets sold in August and driving smartphone penetration to 43-percent.

"Men" producer writing tell-all book on Sheen (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Think all the dirty laundry being aired between Charlie Sheen and his former boss Chuck Lorre on "Two and A Half Men" has ended? Think again.

Lorre, who was targeted by Sheen in a series of public rants earlier this year that led to the TV actor being fired, implied in a "vanity card" at the end of Monday's program he is writing a tell-all book on the open hostility between the two.

The problems between the Sheen and Lorre, which included the show's makers at Warner Bros. television and network CBS which airs the show, seemed to be put at rest on Monday when Warner Bros. announced it settled a $100 million lawsuit brought by Sheen against the producers.

But Lorre may have other plans.

In the vanity cards, which are commonly used to show audiences a dedication or remembrance by producers after a program has ended, Lorre addressed how the issues with Sheen impacted him, personally, and implied he is working on a tell-all book.

"Sometime last year I realized I had become the unwilling contestant in a reality show," the card began.

"For many months I kept hoping and praying that it would end. But it did not. Somewhere along the way, something inside me died," Lorre wrote.

"Now, suddenly, I'm being told that the reality show's been canceled. Apparently, it was just one of those things that somehow got out of control. ... And that's fine. I am so good with that. Yes, please, let's all move on. There's just one problem. That thing inside me that died? It walks at night. It's angry. It's hungry. And worst of all...it's writing a tell-all book."

Lorre may not be alone. Back in February when the fighting among the parties was at its height, Sheen told celebrity website TMZ.com that he was writing his own tell-all book.

As they say in television, stay tuned.

Travel Banner Ads Tips | WEB-DESIGN,WEB-DEVELOPMENT ...

There is power in travel banner ads and the following tips will help you to harness that power and catapult your business to new heights. There are a lot of methods of developing buzz and hype online especially when you are encouraging customers to try new travel packages. Exploring banner ads and adding them to your internet marketing campaign is a fantastic way to spread details about your hotel, restaurant, and other travel products and services. Posting banner advertising is amid the most distinctive and is believed to be one of the most effective methods in marketing on the web. You see, banner advertising makes your offer highly visible especially when your ads are placed on high traffic web sites that are related to your niche.

Banner ads heighten the interest in your travel package or your website. This is one of the many reasons why those in the travel industry are very conscious about creating targeted campaigns for their travel products. The more targeted traffic your travel site receives, the better your conversion rate. And the good news is that the average cost of travel banner ads is not as expensive when compared to other traditional paid marketing methods like pay per click. One of the most effective ways to capitalize on travel banner ads is to exchange banners between one or more websites. With a banner exchange you are not spending any money on advertising. However, be mindful of the quality and volume of traffic the site you are exchanging banners with receives.

An important travel banner ad tip is to place the banner on a web page where there is relevant content. For example, placing your travel banner ad on a site about dog training may not be the most effective use of your advertising dollars. Do whatever it takes to send your visitors to a well laid out landing page. Make sure that once visitors click your banner, they are redirected to a page specific to their needs. Put your banner in a strategic location to encourage more clicks. This may require some testing on your part to see what your target audience is more attracted to. Your travel banner should refer to one offer and be focused on one particular area.

Coordinate your travel banner ad with the color of the website. If you are exchanging banners, take a closer look at the site you are going to exchange with in order to create a banner that will easily integrate with their color scheme. Selecting the right colors can make all the difference in the world, so spend some time creating a dynamic banner for each web page it will be displayed on. With all this mind, understand that the travel industry is a trillion dollar industry. The competition is strong and your travel banner ads must set you apart from your competition. Calculate how much you want to spend on your travel banner and then have one designed that fits your offer perfectly. Go to an expert who sets the standard and will work as hard as you do to attract clicks to your travel banner ad.

Berkshire Hathaway to buy back shares

(AP) ? Warren Buffett is sending a clear signal that he believes Berkshire Hathaway's stock is undervalued by announcing a plan to repurchase stock for the first time since taking over the firm in 1965.

Berkshire said Monday that the company Buffett leads will repurchase its Class A and B shares anytime they are trading at less than 110 percent of book value.

Berkshire's Class A stock surged 6.9 percent, or $6,930, to $107,250 in afternoon trading after the announcement. Its more affordable Class B shares rose $5.09, or 7.7 percent, to $71.46.

Book value is a measure of a company's value that Buffett often cites because it is similar to the intrinsic value figure he calculates to determine if an investment is overpriced. At the end of June, Berkshire estimated its assets were worth $98,716 per Class A share after liabilities were deducted.

That estimate doesn't include Berkshire's $9 billion acquisition of specialty chemical maker Lubrizol that was completed earlier this month.

Stifel Nicolaus analyst Meyer Shields said the repurchase announcement came as a surprise, but investors should realize that Buffett left the terms flexible so he hasn't committed to buying back any stock.

"He's just giving himself another tool to play defense with," Shields said.

Buffett talked about repurchasing Berkshire stock once before in his 1999 annual letter, but never did buy back shares because the price improved after he talked about it being undervalued.

Buffett did not immediately respond to an interview request sent to his assistant Monday.

Last week, Berkshire's Class A shares dipped below $100,000 for the first time since January 2010 as worries about the economy weighed down the overall market.

Andy Kilpatrick, the stockbroker-author of "Of Permanent Value, the Story of Warren Buffett," said Buffett has always said he wants Berkshire stock to trade at a fair price, and this move signals that he didn't agree with the recent prices.

"He's saying we're undervalued, and I'm putting cash here," Kilpatrick said.

Berkshire didn't commit to buying a certain dollar amount of stock, but the Omaha-based company said it wouldn't repurchase stock if doing so would reduce its cash on hand below $20 billion.

But that doesn't seem to be an immediate concern because Berkshire had nearly $48 billion cash on hand at the end of June.

David Rolfe, chief investment officer at Wedgewood Partners, said he was glad to see Buffett's announcement because Berkshire is one of the biggest holdings in Wedgewood's portfolio. Rolfe said the buybacks will be a good use for some of Berkshire's cash that will benefit long-term shareholders because Buffett will only buy the stock when it's undervalued.

"This is old-school Buffett corporate stewardship, and we applaud it," Rolfe said.

Birinyi Associates' researcher Rob Leiphart said the only other company with an open-ended buyback program like this is Exxon Mobil Corp., which announced its repurchase plan in 2000.

Berkshire doesn't have a history of stock repurchases, but America's biggest companies have been increasing the amount they spend buy their own stock. Standard & Poor's Indices says companies in the S&P 500 index spent 41 percent more on stock repurchases in this year's second quarter compared to last year. Those companies spent more than $109 billion on stock buybacks in April, May and June.

Berkshire's Class A hit an all-time high of $151,650 per share in December 2007. Its Class A stock remains the most expensive stock in the U.S., but it has declined since February when it was trading above $131,000 before several major disasters generated losses for Berkshire's insurance units. Berkshire recorded $1.7 billion in insurance losses related to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the Feb. 22 New Zealand earthquake and flooding in Australia.

When Buffett's investment partnership first bought Berkshire stock in 1962, the shares sold for $7 and $8 apiece. At that time, Berkshire was a New England textile firm.

Berkshire owns roughly 80 subsidiaries, including clothing, furniture and jewelry firms, but its insurance and utility businesses typically account for more than half of the company's net income. It has major investments in such companies as Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.

Facebook Advertising For Your Web Business | Wrigley Bound

Be willing to do a little more than the rest, and that will get you noticed and remembered. You will see some marketers using URL shorteners with links going out to sales pages, but that rarely will convert well. There is nothing stopping you from marketing any way you desire, and maybe it all depends on what your goals are and how much you care about your business. Just do not direct people right to sales copy, but you can offer a report of some kind or simply send to a site homepage. One thing that can work out well is if you have truly unique information that will be very useful to people. So put some serious thought in your ultimate blogging theme since you know there is not a lot of room for your message.

Better Business Networking for Internet Marketers | my shopping blog

Networking is an important part of growing a successful long term business because it will help you increase your reach and your market presence. The real essence of creating a hugely successful online business and selling more of your products and services isn?t always marketing; most of the time it is your ability to create good contacts and form workable partnerships with the people who are best able to help you grow your business. This article is going to teach you what you need to know so you can do some good business networking and have the best approach so that you can get as much as possible from your efforts. No matter whether you are inside the VitaVee.com How To Make Money Online For Free For Kids niche or any other niche, it is genuinely crucial that you simply concentrate on top quality enterprise networking.

Focus on Giving, Not Taking: Making the business network one of your more powerful weapons is all about focusing first on giving instead of taking. First, though, you need to see what you?re giving before you can receive. This is going to help you be more effective in your networking with others and getting them to respond favorably to you. If you are the person who initiates that first contact it is important to prove that you have things to offer if you want them to feel comfortable enough with you to give to you. This is how ?give and take? works within the world of business networking and it can be really beneficial over the course of the long run.

Push the Envelope: Finding success with business networking involves in how you take on the process as a whole when compared to other people. You need to put in more of an effort if you want to find better contacts and earn more points than your competitors. Push the envelope so that you can see that the efforts you are making will be far superior to the efforts of others. You need to mix your dedication with your patience because you will run into slow times and that is when you really need to put forth some extra effort. As an World wide web marketer, you?ll need to understand the value of enterprise networking if you want to dominate a niche like VitaVee.com.

Network with Networkers: Business networking provides you with a fantastic opportunity to meet people who are new and whom aren?t already familiar to you. Lots of people that you meet aren?t going to feel like sharing their network with you and that is okay. Don?t put in too much time trying to get to their network, just move on. It is faster and simpler to grow your own network if you work with other networkers. It?ll take quite a bit of time before you actually reach out to these people but it is going to be worth all of the effort and you will see this with your own eyes when you see the returns that come in from this activity.

You need to put lots of prep into your business networking activities because if you just go on and on about it aimlessly, there?s a chance that you are going to wind up making only mediocre contacts who won?t really help you a lot. Create a plan of action and be consistent in your efforts so that you will know for sure that you?re growing your business network and building your business as you move forward. You might have to wait a little bit before you see some real results but if you make all of the best contacts there isn?t anything like it. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and apply these enterprise networking guidelines to grow your Other Resources on the web enterprise.

With no NBA, Cavs' Irving hits books, treats foot (AP)

WESTLAKE, Ohio ? Kyrie Irving left college after one year to play in the NBA.

He's back in school.

It's all the No. 1 overall draft pick can do during the lockout, and Cleveland's rookie point guard has no idea when he'll start his real job.

As Irving waits for the league to settle its labor dispute, the 19-year-old is working toward a psychology degree in North Carolina ? and getting healthy.

Irving has played in just 11 games since last year because of a severe injury to his right foot, which doctors have told him won't be fully healed for three more months. Irving said he hasn't had pain in his foot for seven months. A delay to the start of the season may actually help him.

"My foot is not going to completely heal for a full year," he said Saturday while taking a break during a two-day youth basketball camp he's hosting. "I still feel 150 percent healthy. But as far as my foot healing properly it will take another three months."

Irving has been working out without any restrictions while taking four courses this semester. He's also keeping an eye on the labor dispute, which reached a crucial juncture Friday when the league postponed training camps indefinitely and canceled 43 preseason games.

"I'm not really disappointed," Irving said. "I'm trying to be as optimistic as possible with this whole labor situation. "Hopefully, the NBA and players' association can come to a deal that is fair for both sides."

While other players, including superstar Kobe Bryant and other big-name stars, consider playing overseas to stay sharp ? and get paid ? during the lockout, Irving is content to remain part of Duke's student body.

"I'm going to try and stay in school as long as possible until the lockout is over," he said. "My dad still stresses education in my life. Me finishing up my sophomore year would be great, but me being able to play in an NBA game would be better. I don't want to go overseas. I've got a guaranteed contract here and I don't want to risk injury over there."

Irving doesn't fault any of his peers for playing elsewhere.

"Players have to make money and at the end of the day, it's a business," he said. "You have to weigh it in Kobe's side also. He wants to play basketball along with all the other players. It's his decision and we have to respect it."

Irving said the Cavaliers players have discussed voluntary workouts for mid-October.

Greenbacks, Anyone?

By Tyler Murphy/Life@Home

Like seasonal grains of sand trickling through Mother Nature?s hourglass, the autumn leaves and evening temperatures will steadily fall, signaling the countdown to the start of winter ? and homeowners worrying about their impending home heating costs.

The turbulent price of energy and increased public awareness regarding environmental issues has many of us seeking ways to reduce our cost and carbon footprint. And a smart first place to stop is the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, known to most as NYSERDA.

Officials created the agency in 1975 to help decrease the state?s petroleum use. By 1996, the agency?s funding was expanded so it could develop ?energy-efficiency programs, research and development initiatives, low-income energy programs, and environmental disclosure activities,? says Assistant Director of Communications Dayle Zatlin.

Many of NYSERDA?s programs engage and educate the public on how to make their homes more energy efficient. Here are just some of the authority?s offerings:

  • Free and reduced cost home energy assessments by certified private contractors, determined by income.
  • Covering up to 10 percent of building costs to help offset the cost of energy efficiency improvements for anyone.
  • Low-interest loans (3.49 to 3.99 percent) for energy efficiency improvements, determined by income and/or credit score.
  • Solar energy (photovoltaic or PV) incentives. The average incentive for residential projects with up to 7000 watts of electrical capacity is $8,750 to $12,000.
  • Solar hot water (thermal) incentives: Up to $4,000 per site for a residence.

The financial incentives for making your home more energy efficient don?t stop with the authority either. The state and federal governments have offers, too, Zatlin says. ?In addition to NYSERDA incentives for solar electric and solar thermal installations, the federal government provides a 30 percent tax credit, and New York State offers a 25 percent tax credit up to $5,000,? she says.

Zatlin suggests homeowners begin with an assessment of their dwelling by a NYSERDA certified private contractor. ?The state likes people to make long term investments in their home since they tend to be the most rewarding and efficient over time,? she says. ?We?d like them to take an energy assessment in a home visit by a certified energy assessor.?

Photo: ? iStockphoto.com/ImageInnovation.

Knowing where to begin and who to hire can be tricky. To help homeowners avoid charlatans, NYSERDA maintains a list of eligible businesses with have certified energy assessors on their website. Depending on income, the state will cover the partial or entire cost of an energy assessment, Zatlin says.

One of the companies on NYSERDA?s certified list of energy assessors is Comfort Home Improvement; also know as Comfort Windows, in Latham. The business offers a wide selection of home projects, including windows, doors, siding, basement remodeling, insulation roofing and more.

The company?s insulation manager, Marc Sardino, has been a certified safety and energy assessor for four years. So far this year the company has performed more than 300 energy assessments from their offices in Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester. During the home assessment, which usually takes two to three hours, Sardino examines the residence top to bottom, especially the basement and attic. He says one of the most common issues, especially in homes more than 20-years-old, is inadequate insulation. ?One of the key measures in any home is if you don?t stop the air from escaping the home, it won?t be as efficient,? says Sardino.

Checking for air quality is also critical, Zatlin says. ?We don?t want to seal up a house if there are any problems with radon or CO2,? she says.

Projects that usually require a larger investment from homeowners often involve updating aging hot water heaters, furnaces and windows and larger insulation installations. The upside? Zatlin says the average homeower saves around $700 annually by following assessors? suggestions.

Instant Green

Zatlin and Sardino suggest a number of steps homeowners could take themselves to make their homes more efficient. Here are just a few:

  • Seal cracks. Keep the warm air in and the cold air out by adding insulation, caulking and weather-stripping around doors, attic access, windows, outlets and any area that can let the cold air in and the warm air out.
  • Buy a good thermostat. Use a programmable thermostat with your heating system to lower the temperature automatically when no one is home or at night.
  • Let the sun shine in. Keep blinds and drapes of sun-exposed windows open in the daytime to let heat into your home.
  • Use your fan. Ceiling fans can keep you comfortable in the winter, too. Reversing the direction of the blades pushes warm air down into the room.
  • Unblock the vents. Be sure not to block floor and wall vents with draperies, furniture or rugs. Also, clean vents regularly with a vacuum or broom
  • Close the damper. If you have a fireplace, install glass doors and close the damper when not in use to keep heated air from escaping up the chimney.
  • Buy a power strip. Plug your home entertainment system and electronics into an advanced power strip to reduce standby power.
  • Replace the bulbs. Replace your five most used bulbs with Energy Star qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Lower your water temperature. Some manufacturers set water heater thermostats at 140 degrees; however, 120 degrees is a safe and comfortable level for most people.
  • Reduce your cable?s impact. Two cable/DVR devices use the same amount of electricity as a standard refrigerator. Request an energy-efficient cable box from your cable provider.

On one hand there is information and then is the problem of too much information; guaranteed to not just befuddle you but also ensure that your choices more often than not leave you with a bitter taste in the mouth and since we are talking about medical tourism here sadly you will probably be left with something more disastrous and damaging than bitter taste.

Yes, the world wide web tends to make one feel as if the worlds at there feet; it gives you a sense of empowerment and assurance but then again there is the problem of stretching things a bit too far.

I mean if planning travel was so simple and every ones cup of tea ; would Cox and Kings have survived and thrived for centuries? So before you around planning your trip to a foreign land for a procedure; STOP; PAUSE; Give yourself and the word of mouth / internet data you are relying on some benefit of doubt. It doesn?t matter if the procedure you are opting for is routine or life threatening; the risks cannot be overlooked; it was just two years back that Ushers then wife suffered a cardiac arrest as a complication to the so called routine liposuction procedure.

Hence its important to understand that a backpacking trip is different from a trip to a foreign land for health reasons ; nothing can or should be left to chance. what worked for your aunt/ friend/ colleague may not work for you.
