Why automakers are investing in diesel engines in the U.S.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- On the surface, the Volkswagen brand's total July sales of 35,779 units looks like chump change compared with The Big Boys.

The top-selling vehicle in the country, the Ford F-150, accounted for 60,449 sales in July, while one Honda model, the Civic, nearly single-handedly outsold all of Volkswagen's models combined.

But drill deeper into VW's July sales and you'll see one of the reasons why domestic automakers are starting to invest serious cash in diesel engines for North American vehicles other than heavy-duty pickups.

In July, one out of every three customers who bought a VW spent an extra $2,000 or so for a diesel engine. Diesels accounted for 30 percent of all of the VW brand's July U.S., a record. The German automaker is on track to reach its goal of selling 100,000 diesels in the North America in 2013.

VW's diesel success has been building for a long time.

For decades, VW has steadfastly stood by the diesel and invested in improving its performance, reliability and drivability. The diesel is no longer the smoky, stinky engine it once was. Along the way, VW has built a legion of loyal diesel drivers who display a cult-like devotion to their cars, bragging about the fuel economy and longevity of the engine, and, more importantly, buying one VW diesel after another.

Now, because of VW's growing sales, the high price of gasoline and the looming 54.5 mpg government mandated fuel economy standard, some automakers have decided they can no longer afford to ignore the diesel engine.

This summer, diesel versions of the Chevrolet Cruze and Jeep Grand Cherokee arrive at dealers. Later this year, the Ram 1500 light duty truck will be available with a V6 turbo diesel engine. And more diesels are on the way from Mazda, Cadillac and several other automakers.

On Tuesday at the Advanced Powertrain Forum at the 2013 CAR Management Briefing Seminars here, speakers from Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota and Chrysler and the EPA will discuss nearly all aspects of automotive powertrain technology -- including the diesel engine.

Ford and Toyota, have placed their fuel economy bets on hybrids and have not announced plans for diesel engines in their cars and light duty trucks. Both automakers have an array of top quality diesel engines overseas that could be adapted for use in North America.

But high-mileage hybrids may not be enough to get Ford and Toyota over the fuel economy goal line, as both automakers rely heavily on profitable sales of fuel-thirsty trucks and SUVs.

The diesel question will come up at Tuesday's forum. It will be interesting to hear if Ford and Toyota have re-evaluated their stance on diesels. You can bet the product development folks at both companies will be closely watching the sales numbers for Cruze diesel, the Grand Cherokee diesel and the Ram 1500 with its EcoDiesel engine.

Ride London gives Boris Johnson new spin on capital's cycling appeal

Boris Johnson Ride London

The culmination of an unprecedented weekend of events designed to show off London as a cycling city and in turn inspire the nation came at around 2.30pm on Sunday as a puffing blond man in an oversized blue T-shirt and baggy shorts got off his bike at The Mall, eight hours and 100 miles from his starting point.

"Unbelievable," said Boris Johnson, London's mayor and one of the main instigators of the Ride London events which saw much of the capital given over to the two-wheeled for two days. "I was overtaken solidly for about four hours, and then in the last bit I was starting to overhaul some people, a few 60-year-old men, children. But 80-year-old women were still soaring past me. So it was a very chastening but wonderful experience."

Around 50,000 riders, including many families, packed on to a short section of closed roads on Saturday, before 16,000 of their more gung-ho peers took a longer loop from the capital into Surrey and back again. The new events showed London to be "the world capital of the velocipede", an ebullient Johnson told the crowds at the finish over the PA.

The weekend was intended to tap into the enthusiasm sparked by the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics for all things cycling, both as a sport and an everyday pursuit. Saturday also saw a race for top women riders around central London, won by Britain's Laura Trott, while there were also youth and handcycle events. Sunday saw men's teams tackle an extended version of the 100-mile course ridden by Johnson.

Billed as the London Marathon on wheels, Ride London will become an annual festival of cycling intended to inspire all sorts to take up the pursuit, much as the London Marathon has done for running over 33 years.

The mayor invested considerable political capital in the event, not least risking the ire of motorists with a series of road closures covering large parts of central, east and west London as well as a fair section of Surrey.

He also took something of a risk in promising to ride the 100-mile event, and in recent months seemingly spent as much time gloomily predicting a ponderous 12-hour effort as he did actually training.

In the end, supported by a mini-peloton of officials and his wife, Marina, Johnson made it in a very decent eight hours 10 minutes, including several "long and liquid breaks" and an interlude when a kindly co-competitor called Mark fixed a mayoral puncture.

His efforts should be an inspiration for others, Johnson said: "The truth is it's not that hard, and I'm here to prove it. I am 17 stone, I'm by no means fit, and I got myself round that course in a perfectly respectable time. Not supersonic, but perfectly respectable.

"The message we're trying to get over is this is for everybody."

The crowds around the course were sometimes modest compared with the marathon, but they were encouraging for an event in its first year.

"There were people out in their front gardens at 7.30 in the morning in their pyjamas, with cups of tea, cheering people on," said Catherine Hayley-Bell, 29, a London solicitor who had just completed the course with friend Sara Stebbling, 31. It was their first such cycling event, making them relatively rare on a course filled with experienced-looking riders sporting club jerseys and expensive, shiny bikes.

The event organiser, Hugh Brasher, also race director of the London Marathon, said the aim was to have more cycling newcomers take part next year, when the entry intake will be increased by about 6,000.

For the inaugural year, Brasher said, it was seen as useful from an organisational point of view to make sure most of the field would finish the 100 miles within the nine-hour time limit.

"We will absolutely broaden the appeal," he said. "But we had to be quite selective in the first year in terms of the number of riders we could take who had never done this type of event before."

Johnson's efforts should tempt more of those not fitting the "chiselled whippet" model described by the mayor, Brasher added. "We've got the entries for 2014 open in eight days' time. If the pictures of the mayor on the front pages of newspapers don't inspire people to say, 'If he can do it, I can do it,' then nothing will. It puts it into the place of the normal person, much like the London Marathon has done."

They might not have the mayor for company next year, however. Asked if he would commit to returning in 2014, Johnson paused. "I'm not giving any hostages to fortune," he said. "I think I'll keep my powder dry on that one."

Horse starved in Citrus Co; animal lovers appalled

Floral City, Florida - "I cried her name, I said, 'Mary, Mary -- how could they do this to you?'" says a sobbing Cheryl Pence.?

She's talking about Mary, an Arabian mare she used to own. She saw Mary again Thursday afternoon, right before she died.

When animal control officers arrived at the horse's current home near Floral City, Mary was down on the ground, too weak to stand -- simply a breathing carcass.

"Deplorable, emaciated, there's really not a term for it -- it's beyond emaciation," says Animal Control Officer Terry Funderburk of the horse's condition.

PHOTOS: Severely neglected horse euthanized, woman arrested ?**WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES**

The horse's owner, Tammi Kampman, was arrested and faces an animal cruelty charge. A vet says the mare's teeth were so uncared for, that she could not physically eat.

"It had no way to process the food put in front of it," explains Animal Control Supervisor Lora Peckham. "It literally starved to death, because of a lack of medical care."

The arrest report indicates that over the past year people in this rural neighborhood, including other horse owners, had offered to help the family. And Pence, who had given the family Mary four years ago so their girls could ride, begged to get Mary back.

"I said, 'but if you can't take care of her, I can take her back. I'm happy to take her back; I love this horse,'" Pence says.

But according to Citrus County Animal Control, no one called them to report the neglected horse. Some residents told investigators they didn't want to cause hard feelings in the neighborhood and Pence thought someone else had picked up the phone.

When 10 News knocked on the mobile home's door today, we were told to go away, so we don't know why this horse was allowed to suffer for so long. However, we did see several cars at the house and a bass boat out back.

"She took no action to get a vet on property," said Peckham.?

Yet, because there isn't an indication of "intentional abuse", Peckham explained that state law allows only a misdemeanor charge. Kampman bonded out of jail on Thursday.

Mary was so far gone she had to be euthanized and her former owner is now left with photographs of better days and a gnawing guilt.

"She's in horse heaven and she's not suffering," says Pence. "But I will never do that again. I will never give away a horse again."

Animal Control Officers say it's important for people to officially report animal abuse or neglect. And if owners find themselves in a situation where they don't have the money, time, or will to properly care for animal, officials urge owners to ask county agencies or area rescue groups for help.

Messi and Barcelona mobbed on Israel arrival

Lionel Messi and fellow Barcelona stars were mobbed by football fans on their arrival in Israel, where the Spanish giants are staging two "training camps for peace" for Israelis and Palestinians.

The players visited the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, were greeted by the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, in Bethlehem and were working with Palestinian youngsters in Hebron on Saturday night.

On Sunday, they are due to meet Israel President Shimon Peres before coaching more children in Tel Aviv.

"The goals are important but it's also crucial to educate children and try to bring them together," said the Barcelona midfielder, Andres Iniesta.

The training sessions are organised by the Peres Centre for Peace as well as the Israeli and Palestinian football federations.

In October 2012, Barcelona caused controversy when former Israeli soldier Gilad Shait, held for five years on the Gaza Strip, was invited to watch the "Clasico" fixture between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

It was a decision which sparked calls for a boycott of the Catalan club.

About 25,000 spectators turned up for the Saturday night training session in Hebron, a crowd which included Mohammad Assaf, the Gaza singer who won the "Arab Idol" talent show earlier this year.

Fans jostled for the opportunity to snap Messi and his teammates on their mobile phones.

After a brief warm-up period, the Barcelona stars played with a group of boys and girls, relaying some of the secrets of their trademark intricate passing game.

Jibril Rajoub, the president of the Palestinian football federation, said he hoped that when Barcelona visited again in the future, it would be in a "an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel".

"Sport is the best way to overcome hate and hostility," said Rajoub, describing the visit as an "historic day".

Time Warner Cable blacks out CBS stations

CBS

After fee negotiations failed between Time Warner Cable and CBS, the cable provider on Friday blacked out the network for customers in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Boston, Detroit and other markets at 5 p.m. ET.

"We agreed to an extension on Tuesday morning with the expectation that we would engage in a meaningful negotiation with CBS. Since then, CBS has refused to have a productive discussion," the company said in a statement. "It's become clear that no matter how much time we give them, they're not willing to come to reasonable terms. We thank our customers for their patience and support as we continue to fight hard to keep their prices down."

CBS claims in its own statement that Time Warner Cable "has conducted negotiations in a combative and non-productive spirit, indulging in pointless brinksmanship and distorted public positioning ? such as the fictional and ridiculous 600 percent increase CBS supposedly demanded ? while maintaining antiquated positions no longer held by any other programming distributor in the business."

The network insists it wants only "fair compensation for the most-watched television network with the most popular content in the world."?

"Big Brother" and "Under the Dome" are two of the network's big summer hits that TWC subscribers in the affected cities will not be able to to watch during the blackout. The network is also home to megahits "The Big Bang Theory," "NCIS," "Two and a Half Men" and more.?

Showtime, which is also owned by CBS, is blacked out as well.

The premium cable network said in a statement that Time Warner Cable's move was "completely unnecessary" and "totally punitive to our subscribers." Showtime also noted that it had agreed to allow the cable provider to continue carrying the premium network while negotiations were ongoing, and is "deeply disappointed" by the decision.

On Demand content from CBS will also be unavailable during the blackout.?

CBS said in its statement that it hopes the blackout will be short-lived, but it is unclear how long it will last.

Facebook?to explain its News Feed at Aug. 6 event

Social media

Aug. 2, 2013 at 11:32 AM ET

Facebook

Duane Hoffman / NBC News

The Facebook News Feed is a source of frustration and confusion for many. Why does it show the things it shows? Why doesn't it show every photo posted by that one girl you like? How do you control it? The social network will finally break things down on Aug. 6.

According to the press invitation for 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., Facebook will be "taking a deeper look at the ranking algorithms that determine which stories appear at the top of your feed" and discussing "a specific update to organic ranking that?s coming up."

We also expect to hear plenty of reminders about the signals we can give Facebook to help it better rank content in the News Feed. For example, liking an item, commenting, sharing, or otherwise interacting with a post can indicate that we want to see more items like that. On the flipside, hiding the post from our News Feed using the dropdown menu, signals that we don't want to see similar items as much.

How Facebook intends to improve or change the News Feed ranking remains a mystery though ? until Aug. 6, at least.

Want more tech news or interesting links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook posts, or circling her on?Google+.

How much is a tourist spending in Israel?

The Israel Ministry of Tourism reveals the average tourist spends $1,500 in Israel.

The recently published 2012 Inbound Tourism Survey Annual Report reveals new information regarding the characteristics of tourists and visitors to Israel. The survey was carried out by the Tourism Ministry among a representative sample of 25,000 families (representing about 41,500 individuals).

The recent years have seen an increase of over $1 billion in revenue to the Israeli economy from incoming tourism, in spite of Operation Pillar of Defense in mid-November 2012, which adversely affected incoming tourism for several months.

Some 1.7 million tourists visit Israel in January-June. Tourism Ministry to hold road show in China featuring Israeli food, Dead Sea mud treatments

The average expenditure per tourist who came to Israel in 2012 for 30 days or less stood at $1,484. The average expenditure per tourist who came to Israel in 2012 for one day only stood at $153. A tourist arriving on a cruise ship spent on average $145 a day.

The average expenditure per tourist who came to Israel in 2012 on an organized tour stood at $1,549; on a package deal ? $1,500, and FITs (frequent individual tourists who pay for all their land services in Israel) ? $1,426.

Over half of all visitors and tourists to Israel in 2012 were Christian (56%) and only 24% were Jewish. Of the Christian visitors, 50% were Catholic, 19% Protestant and there is an increase in the number defining themselves as belonging to another religion or with no religious affiliation.

Only 4% certain they won't return to Israel
In response to the question what was the most influential factor in making a decision about coming to Israel, 64% answered family and friends (49% in 2011). Fourteen percent attributed their decision to the influence of the travel agent (20% in 2011).

Thirty-six percent of all tourists received their information via the internet, as opposed to 27% in 2011, with 31% relying on the travel agent and tour operator (39% in 2011).

Thirty-two percent of tourists arrived as part of an organized tour, 46% arrived independently and 22% bought a tour package. In 2011, 36% came on an organized tour, 38% independently and 26% bought a tour package.

Seventy-four percent of tourists stayed in a hotel or holiday village; 16% stayed with family and friends; 4% stayed in youth hostels; 3% in rented accommodation; 2% in a Christian hostel and the remaining 2% in other hostel accommodation (practically no change since 2011).

The average length of stay for a tourist in 2012 was 8.2 days, similar to 2011.

Eighty percent of tourists were sure or think that they will return to Israel for a visit, 16% said maybe and about 4% answered negatively.

?In recent years, revenue from incoming tourism has risen by over $1 billion," says Tourism Minister Uzi Landau. "Tourists are voting with their feet throughout the year and we welcome them.

"The Tourism Ministry will continue to work at full speed to maintain and strengthen this upward trend, both cultivating existing markets and breaking into new markets. It is not only the tourists that benefit. The State benefits as well with increased revenue in the economy and the creation of new jobs in the periphery.?

Government releases survellience documents as pressure for transparency mounts

Saul Loeb / AFP - Getty Images file

U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper testifies before the House Select Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, in this April 11, 2013 file photo.

By Andrew Rafferty, Michael Isikoff, Jim Miklaszewski, and Courtney Kube, NBC News

The director of National Intelligence on Wednesday declassified documents relating to the government?s collection of telephone data, one of the wide-ranging surveillance programs that brought global outcry over privacy concerns after being thrust into the public spotlight by self-proclaimed leaker Edward Snowden.?

The documents, which in some places are heavily redacted, were released ?in the interest of increased transparency,??the office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a statement.?

The move came as NSA officials returned to Capitol Hill on Wednesday, this time to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee to discuss the sweeping NSA snooping programs and Snowden's actions.

Deputy Director John Inglis?told the committee that no one has been disciplined over the former security contractor's leak and his ability to take large amounts of classified data from agency computers.? ?

"No one has offered to resign. Everyone is working hard to understand what happened,'' Inglis said.

The three newly released documents include the 2009 and 2011 reports on the government?s ?Bulk Collection Program? under the PATRIOT Act. The other?record made public?was an order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court?detailing how data should be gathered and stored.

"The custodian of records of [redacted] shall produce to NSA upon service of the appropriate secondary order, and continue production on an ongoing daily basis thereafter for the duration of this order," the primary order reads.???

It originally was not set to be declassified until April 12, 2038. ?

Snowden offered details to news agencies about a court order calling for Verizon to hand over Americans phone records and the existence of a program called Prism, which collects bulk data of foreign citizens that are suspected to be involved with terrorist organizations.

The declassified documents also contain information about government efforts to gather intelligence on electronic communications. The Dec. 4, 2009 report to the House Intelligence Committee shows that for years the NSA has been collecting records of all Americans emails, including the sender, recipient and time of day the emails were sent.

However the content of those communications have not been collected, according to the report.

Officials have previously acknowledged the bulk collection of emails was terminated in December 2011 after questions arose about its usefulness.

The 2009 document also notes that the collection of phone and email data is ?some of the most sensitive? intelligence gathering programs conducted by the government, and warns members of Congress that public disclosure of their existence would cause ?exceptionally grave? damage to national security.

The report then describes both the telephone and emails efforts as programs that "operate on a very large scale" and had been authorized by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court under regular? day orders .

In addition to the bulk collection of telephone records being collected under the Patriot Act, the report states that another legal authority -- called the "pen register" provisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act-- authorized the government "to collect similar kinds of information about electronic communications."

These electronic communications are described in the report as "the 'to? and 'from' lines in email and time an email is sent-- excluding the content of the email and the 'subject' line."

The report adds: "Again, this information is collected pursuant to court order (generally last 90 days) and, under relevant court decisions, is not protected by the Fourth Amendment."

Both the documents from 2009 and 2011 acknowledge there had been "compliance" problems? with both programs.

The 2009 report states that the problems "generally involved the implementation of highly sophisticated techniques"? that? "in some instances, resulted in the automated tools operating in a manner that was not completely consistent" with court orders.

The problems prompted the NSA to create an "Office of Compliance" to address the problems, the 2009 report states.

The documents also reference security contractors like Snowden, saying that ?appropriately trained and authorized technical personnel? may access the government data.?

Snowden, who remains stuck at an airport in Moscow awaiting an asylum request to the Russian government, has said he accessed information of the government?s massive intelligence gathering programs while working at intelligence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton.?

Also on Wednesday, the British newspaper The Guardian revealed another secret NSA spying program known as ?Xkeyscore,? which the paper reports allows analysts to search through huge databases including emails, online chats and internet history with no prior authorization.

Last week the House narrowly rejected a proposal that would have severely restricted the NSA?s ability to collect phone records, with some Congress? most liberal and conservative members voting in accord.

At the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., pressed intelligence officials for hard numbers on how many potential terror plots have actually been foiled by the call-tracking database ?known as Section 215, the Patriot Act provision that authorizes it.

Leahy said he was ?far from convinced? that the intelligence officers know how many attacks have been thwarted by the collection of phone records.

He also criticized the documents made public Wednesday for containing little rationale behind the legalization of the program.

?It does not contain any real analysis of the 215 relevance standard,? he said.
