Yahoo Buying Tumblr for $1.1 Billion | Hawaii Reporter
The deal, announced Monday, is a bold bet by Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer to revitalize the company by co-opting a Web property with strong visitor traffic, but little revenue.
Yahoo made clear it was sensitive to concerns that it might damage Tumblr by making it less irreverent or more corporate.
?Per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up, Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business,? Yahoo said in a statement.
The acquisition, which will use up about a fifth of Yahoo's $5.4 billion in cash and marketable securities, is the largest by far since Mayer took the reins in July with the goal of reversing a long decline in Yahoo's business and Web traffic.
Analysts said Yahoo appeared to be overpaying for a business that might not contribute to revenue for years, but said that Yahoo had to do something to plug a hole in its social media efforts.
RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Mahaney called it a ?long-shot/long-term investment? but one that fits into Mayer's turnaround strategy.
?[Yahoo's] fundamentals have been subpar for numerous years, in part because of the company's missing presence in Social and Mobile. Tumblr may help [Yahoo] develop that presence,? Mahaney said in a note.
Tumblr is one of the Web's most popular hubs of so-called user-generated content, drawing young people who use the platform to post pictures and text. Tumblr has more than 100 million blogs in its network, ranging from ?White Men Wearing Google Glass? to housing-focused ?The Worst Room.?
Though Yahoo remains one of the Web's most popular destinations, it has seen its revenue shrink in recent years as consumers and advertisers favor rivals such as Google and Facebook. The deal is expected to increase Yahoo's audience by 50 percent.

While Tumblr is certainly popular - it has tens of millions of monthly unique visitors - analysts questioned what kind of contribution it will make to Yahoo revenue, since advertising on the site is in its nascent stages.
Media reports have pegged Tumblr's 2012 revenue at $13 million. The privately held company, based in Manhattan, does not disclose its financial results.
Yahoo expects that Tumblr will help boost revenue by 2014, Ken Goldman, Yahoo's chief financial officer, said on a call with analysts. He did not provide specific numbers.
?Even if revenue was $100 million, it means Yahoo paid 10 times revenue,? said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis. ?Ten times is what you pay to date the belle of the ball. It's on the outer bands of M&A.?
Yahoo could quickly boost Tumblr's revenue by combining the website with its own sales force, said Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser. Loading Tumblr up with banner ads risks alienating its users, however, and probably wouldn't provide a significant lift to Yahoo's overall revenue, he said.
?It's not clear that this deal will be favorable from a return-on-capital perspective,? Wieser said. ?One billion [dollars] for one company is a big bet.?
Gillis and Wieser were contacted on Sunday after the deal was reported by the online publication All Things D.
Mayer, on the conference call, described the Tumblr deal as an exception and said Yahoo was not necessarily planning lots of similarly sized deals.
Yahoo is one of several companies that have coughed up considerable money for buzz-worthy start-ups that hold promise. Facebook bought the popular social media photo site Instagram for $1 billion last year. In 2006, Google paid $1.6 billion for YouTube.
Shares of Yahoo rose as much as 2 percent in early trading Monday, but later fell back. They were up 18 cents to $26.70 in late-morning dealings. Through Friday's close, the shares had risen 70 percent since Mayer became CEO.
Image issues
One question Yahoo may have to address is Tumblr's reputation as a home for pornographic blogs. At one point in 2009, about 80 percent of Tumblr's top sites had something to do with adult content. Today that number is closer to 5 percent, according to Quantcast data, but the image lingers.
Mayer said on the call that Yahoo's targeting tools would allow advertisers to zero in on specific demographics and content.
One area where Yahoo plans to ramp up advertising: Tumblr's dashboard, the main landing point, akin to a newsfeed.
Dealing with that and other issues may fall to David Karp, 26, who founded Tumblr in 2007 and will remain CEO.
Karp, a self-taught programmer who left high school in favor of home schooling, did not take part in Mayer's conference call. Media reports have suggested his take in the billion-dollar sale would top $200 million.
In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, Karp seemed to be less interested in money than in Tumblr's prominence.
?There are a lot of rich people in the world. There are very few people who have the privilege of getting to invent things that billions of people use,? he said.

Deal on bin Laden evidence in WikiLeaks case
FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? Lawyers in the court-martial of an Army private who sent more than 700,000 classified U.S. documents to WikiLeaks said Tuesday they have reached a deal that may eliminate the need for testimony from a member of the military team that killed Osama bin Laden. Prosecutors also agreed to accept Pfc. Bradley Manning's guilty plea to a lesser version of one of the 22 counts he faces.
Under the agreement, both the prosecution and defense teams would acknowledge at Manning's trial next month that there is digital evidence indicating bin Laden saw some of the material Manning released. The raid team member, presumably a Navy SEAL, was expected to testify that the evidence was recovered during a May 2011 raid on the al-Qaida leader's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
The deal must be approved by the military judge Army Col. Denise Lind, who has been presiding over a series of pretrial hearings that ended Tuesday. She also will preside at the bench trial, which is scheduled to begin June 3 and run through the summer.
Earlier in the hearing, Army Maj. Ashden Fein told Lind that prosecutors had changed their minds about trying to convict Manning of violating the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act in connection with the release of a State Department cable known as Reykjavik-13. WilkiLeaks posted the cable in early 2010 about a meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland, summarizing U.S. Embassy discussions with Icelandic officials about the country's financial troubles.
Manning has acknowledged sending the cable to WikiLeaks after he found it on a secure government computer network while working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq. According to his courtroom confession on Feb. 28, Manning believed the cable indicated the United States was refusing to help the Icelandic government "due to the lack of long-term geopolitical benefit."
The cable was the basis for a charge alleging violation of a federal law, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Manning pleaded guilty in February to lesser versions of that and eight other offenses, acknowledging violations of military law that, in total, carry maximum prison term of 20 years.
Fein did not give a reason for the change, and prosecutors said they will still try to convict Manning of other serious offenses.
Manning, a 25-year-old Oklahoma native, is charged with indirectly aiding the enemy by causing classified material to be published on WikiLeaks. To prove that charge, punishable by a maximum life prison term, prosecutors must show that he knew the material would be seen by al-Qaida members. He has already admitted he downloaded the files from supposedly secure government networks and sent them to WikiLeaks while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2010.
Manning said in a February statement that he leaked the Afghan and Iraq battlefield reports, State Department cables and video of a U.S. Apache helicopter attack that killed a Reuters news photographer and his driver, because he wanted the public to know how the American military was fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with little regard for human life.
Lind also ruled that the trial will be closed for portions of the testimony of 24 witnesses to prevent spillage of classified information. She said an unusual "dry run" hearing with a sample witness on May 8 showed that alternatives to courtroom closure proposed by Manning's defense team would not have prevented a spillage of sensitive information.
Lind said redacted transcripts of the closed portions of the trial will be made publicly available, but she didn't say how long it will take to have the transcripts cleared for release.

BERLIN (AP) ? Justin Bieber's pet monkey is set to become the property of Germany.
Mally the Monkey was seized by German customs March 28 when Bieber failed to produce required vaccination and import papers for the animal after landing in Munich. He had until midnight Friday to produce those documents.
Customs spokesman Thomas Meister said after offices opened following a holiday weekend that officials received no documents. He said the customs authority will formally transfer ownership of the animal to the German state on Tuesday.
Bieber will then have six weeks to contest the decision. It wasn't immediately clear when authorities will make a decision on the monkey's permanent home.
Mally, a capuchin monkey, has been cared for at Munich's animal shelter since being taken into quarantine.

Google Chrome for Android updated to support full screen browsing
Google Chrome 27 was released on desktop yesterday and now Google has updated the browser for Android devices.
The latest build comes with a few enhancements. Omnibar would hide when you scroll down to give you more screen space to read web content.
Searching has been simplified. You can now view and refine your query inside the Omnibox easily.
Chrome on Android Tablets also now provide quick access history. You just need to long press the back button.
Google has also improved stability in this build. It should run smoother.

Cards lose Garcia as shoulder woes return

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals have placed left-hander Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.
General manager John Mozeliak says the team became aware of the issue about a week ago and had hoped Garcia could work through it. He was charged with six runs and six hits over 5 1-3 innings in a 7-6 victory over Milwaukee on Friday, improving to 5-2 while his ERA increased from 2.88 to 3.58.
This is Garcia's fourth trip to the disabled list, including a two-month stint during the 2012 season with a left shoulder sprain.
St. Louis didn't announce who would take Garcia's place in the rotation. The NL Central leaders recalled reliever Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.

Flesh-eating disease victim gets prosthetic hands
ATLANTA (AP) ? A metro Atlanta woman who lost both hands, her left leg and right foot after contracting a flesh-eating disease was on her way back from Ohio Friday after being fitted with prosthetic hands.
Aimee Copeland, 25, is returning from Hilliard, Ohio, where she was fitted with a pair of "bionic" hands with 24 programmable functions that will improve her dexterity, her father, Andy, told the Associated Press.
Copeland, of Snellville, contracted a rare infection called necrotizing fasciitis in May 2012 after falling from a zip line and gashing her leg. She spent two months at the Shepherd Center, a rehabilitation clinic in Atlanta, learning to move, eat and bathe without prosthetics.
She spent part of the week at Touch Bionics being fitted for the prosthetic hands that her father says will be controlled by her muscle movements and arm positions.
"All four days she sent us videos of things she could do," Copeland said. "The second day she was moving water between cups. On the third day she was cutting a cucumber. On the fourth day she was doing more typical things, like applying makeup to her face and more personal things."
Copeland said the hands were given to Aimee in exchange for her serving as a Touch Bionics ambassador. He said Aimee is likely to begin looking for a prosthetic leg with a computer-controlled knee joint to allow for more natural movement than a mechanical one.
"I just really look forward to her regaining her confidence about certain things she's been unable to do," Copeland said, "Really I just want to see her enjoying life the way that she should."
Among other things, Copeland said, the prosthetic hands will help his daughter learn to prepare meals from scratch, which she enjoyed doing before the amputations.
