Register wins award for ?best real estate section?

SAN ANTONIO ? The Orange County Register has won first place for having the nation?s best real estate section in print for a mid-sized daily newspaper in the National Association of Real Estate Editors? 2010 journalism awards competition.

The Register?s Sunday Real Estate Section ? compiled partly from news stories posted on its five real estate blogs ? was picked as the ?Best Newspaper Real Estate or Home Section Less than 250,000 Circulation.?

It was the first time that the Register entered the NAREE competition. The awards were announced Friday at the organization?s annual conference in San Antonio.

The award recognized the contributions of Register business editor Julie Gallego, section designer Scott Albert and writers Jonathan Lansner, Jeff Collins, Marilyn Kalfus, Kelli Hart and former Register staffer Erika Chavez.

The award was one of 28 first-place winners in the annual competition.

The Los Angeles Times? Saturday Home Section was recognized as the nation?s best real estate/home section for a newspaper with a circulation of more than 250,000.

The award winners were selected by a panel of judges from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio Univeristy. Professor Patrick S. Washburn, a former news reporter and editor, chaired the panel of judges. NAREE said it received a record number of entries from professional journalists across the nation this years. Prizes totaled $8,000 for first-place winners.

The 81-year-old organization has more than 600 members nationwide who cover real estate and home and design for the general circulation and trade press.

Other award winners include ?

  • Best Overall Entry: Shannon Behnken of the Tampa Tribune for a series of stories exposing Florida?s foreclosure robo-signing scandal.
  • Best Freelance Collection: Mary Umberger, a former Chicago Tribune writer who contributes to her former publication, Inman News and a variety of other publications.
  • Ruth Ryon Best Entry by a Young Journalist: Alyssa Abkowitz, SmartMoney magazine.
  • Best Daily Newspaper Real Estate Report: Robbie Whelan, Wall Street Journal
  • Best Daily Newspaper Mortgage or Financial Report: Nick Timiraos, Wall Street Journal
  • Best Daily Newspaper Commercial Real Estate Report: Kris Hudson, Wall Street Journal
  • Best Report for Newspaper under 250,000 circulation: Eric Pryne, Seattle Times
  • Best Weekly Newspaper Report: Theresa Agorino, Crain?s New York Business
  • Best Magazine Report: Cindy Hoedel, Kansas City Star
  • Best Trade Magazine Report-Residential Real Estate/Mortgage: Kerry Curry, HousingWire
  • Best Trade Magazine Report-Commercial Real Estate: Sarah Ryley, Real Deal magazine
  • Best Residential Real Estate or Mortgage/Finance Report: Prashant Gopal, Bloomberg
  • Best Commercial Real Estate Report: Dan Levy, Bloomberg
  • Best Blog: Sheree R. Curry, Freelance-AOL Real Estate
  • Best Broadcast Report: Shannon Behnken, The Tampa Tribune
  • Best Home & Design Feature, Elizabeth Fenner, Money magazine
  • Best Column: Kenneth R. Harney, Washington Post Writers Group
  • Best Series: Kirsten Grind, The Puget Sound Business Journal
