This DIY Brake Light Backpack Warns Cars and Other Bikers When You?re Slowing Down or Turning

This DIY Brake Light Backpack Warns Cars and Other Bikers When You’re Slowing Down or TurningThis DIY Brake Light Backpack Warns Cars and Other Bikers When You’re Slowing Down or Turning When you're biking or riding a motorcycle, proper signaling to the people around you is essential to making sure that they?and you?get home safely. We've shown you some bike signaling projects before, but this DIY brake light backpack is a little easier to build, and warns everyone around you when you're slowing down or about to turn, and is bright enough for use by cyclists or people riding a motorcycle or scooter.

The video above from the fine folks at Adafruit Industries walks you through the process from start to finish, but hit the link below for the the full guide if you're interested in making one for yourself. You'll need a FLORA accelerometer, a battery pack, a wireless module to control the lights, and the LEDS to make this project work (all of the parts are available at the project page, if you're interested.) Once you have all the gear, assembling everything will take some soldering skills and a steady hand, but it's a great project, even if you're just getting started with DIY electronics projects.

The FLORA accelerometer automatically senses when you're braking and will activate your brake lights as you're slowing down. Then, the wireless module lets you toggle the left or right signals whenever you're getting ready to turn. The LEDs are bright and easily seen at night, which is perfect for cycling or motoring around town at night.
