Teammates pay tribute to late Curran ? Cricket News Update
Rich tributes continue to pour in for former Zimbabwe all-rounder Kevin Curran, who passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, in Mutare at the age of 53.
Curran, who played eleven One Day Internationals for Zimbabwe during his four-year-long International career, collapsed on Wednesday morning while jogging, according to a statement by Zimbabwe Cricket, though the exact cause of death is yet to be determined. At the time of death, he was coach of the Mashonaland Eagles team, and was in Matura a Twenty20 match against Mountaineers.
John Traicos, a former captain of Curran, remembered him as a dedicated person. While speaking to media reporters, the 65-year-old former off-spinner said that he was shocked to hear the news of his death from Duncan Fletcher.
?The most shocking thing is, he was incredibly fit. He was a fitness fanatic, he used to be in the gym every day,? Traicos said when reached for a comment on the tragic loss. ?He was very, very competitive and played rugby, tennis and golf. He was a naturally talented guy.?
?I remember Kevin being a really dedicated guy, who would bowl for hours on the concrete pitches on his own. He had a lovely action, a very nice away swinger and bowl very, very quickly,? the former Zimbabwe off-spinner recalled.
Zimbabwe all-rounder Heath Streak, who was coached by Curran, called him a passionate cricketer who was eager to help cricket in the country.
"He lived cricket and he was very passionate about Zimbabwe and helping cricket in the country...He was a fit guy...It's really sad what happened,? said Streak, who had also worked with Curran when he was on selection committee.
Curran made his international debut during 1983 World Cup, and went on to play 11 ODIs for his country, before retiring in 1987. After retiring from all cricket in 1999, he continued serving the sport as coach and administer.
The all-rounder briefly headed the Namibia national cricket team, before returning to Zimbabwe in 2004. On his return home, Curran joined the CFX Cricket Academy in Harare as the director of coaching.
In 2005, he replaced Phil Simmons as Zimbabwe national coach, and continued coaching the Rhodesians until 2007, before moving to a domestic franchise Mashonaland Eagles for a parallel role.
At the time of death he was still coaching Eagles, and was also on the board of selectors for the national team.
