Fall flavors & activities abound with a California day trip ? The Full ...

Fall is in the air, and it?s once again time to breathe it all in, drink apple cider and ready for the cooler months ahead. Fortunately, there are lots of fall activities to help you bid adieu to summer, get you outside and enjoying the sublime weather.

Northern California

Cool Patch Pumpkins in Dixon features a pumpkin patch for pick-your-own and a corn maze that covers 53 acres. The maze was named to the Guinness Book of World Records in 2007, and this year?s maze is 13 acres larger than that one. Prepare for hours of fun finding your way out! Open 9 a.m. ? 8 p.m. every day (weather permitting) through Nov. 5.

Every weekend is a reason to celebrate at Historic Hawes Farms in Anderson: Pumpkin Harvest Arts & Crafts Festival and Scarecrow Contest, Oct. 13 ? 14; Western Days, Oct. 20 ? 21; and the Farmhand 5K through the fields, orchards and more, Nov. 3. Every day, there are train rides, a pumpkin patch, and corn and hay bale mazes. Open Fridays, 5 ? 10 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. ? 11 p.m.; and Sundays, 10 a.m. ? dusk. Also open Oct. 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25, 5 ? 10 p.m.

A petting zoo, train rides, hay and corn mazes, and a tractor-pulled hay ride are reasons enough to visit the Nash Ranch Pumpkin Patch in Redding. More than 40 varieties of pumpkins can be found in the 15-acre pumpkin patch, with lots of produce to take home to create your own fall feast. Open daily 10 a.m. ? 6 p.m.; extended hours on the weekends, through Nov. 3.

Slide down the hay slide and then climb atop the hay pyramid at Country Pumpkins in Orland. You can also pick your own pumpkin ? or any other gourd, for that matter! ? and wander through the corn maze. Open daily 10 a.m. ? 6 p.m. through Oct. 31.

The Pierce College Farm Center Halloween Harvest Festival in Woodland Hills has a six-acre corn maze, pick-your-own pumpkin patch, hay rides, a haunted house and a stage show with ?Spookley? the square pumpkin and Jack the scarecrow. Haunted house and trail hours are dusk ? 10 p.m. weekdays, dusk ? midnight weekends. Through Oct. 31.

Friday 1 ? 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. ? 4 p.m. Through Oct. 31.

In addition to pick-your-own pumpkins at the Julian Mining Company Fall Celebration in Julian, you can also pick-your-own apples. Spend the day going on hay and wagon rides, traversing the child-size hay bale maze, and take some fresh apple cider home to enjoy later. Weekends through December: 10 a.m. ? 5 p.m. For a real scare, go on the Night Time Spooky Hayride: Tale of the Doomed Miner, Oct. 20 and 27, 7:30 p.m.

The haunted hay rides at the Boccali Ranch Pumpkin Patch in Ojai are perfect for a good scare. During the day, adopt a pumpkin to take home and wander through the child-sized hay bale maze. Open 10 a.m. ? dusk through Oct. 31.
