Vilsack Calls Wisconsin Agriculture a ?National Success Story?

U.S. Agriculture Secretary and former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack tipped his hat to Wisconsin this week, saying the state?s farming industry is doing big business on the world-wide stage. During a visit to Milwaukee on Wednesday as part of his multi-city campaign designed to help connect small and medium sized businesses with resources needed to export their food and agricultural goods overseas, Vilsack focused on the state?s recent growth in the export market.

?As demonstrated by Wisconsin?s agricultural success in 2010, the nation?s farm economy is stronger than ever,? he said. ?However, when you consider that just one percent of U.S. businesses export, you realize there much more capacity to grow our economy and create jobs. Today?s event is about seizing those opportunities.?

Wisconsin farm exports grew 36 percent over 2009 figures, delivering a record $2.4 billion in sales. Only Texas and Tennessee farm exports grew at a better rate. The state?s agriculture industry also supports nearly 350,000 jobs in the state, or one in 10 jobs overall.

Meanwhile, the secretary also spent part of his morning at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis on Thursday, where he held a public forum on rural job creation. He also answered questions from reporters about the massive meat recall issued this week from products shipped from a Cargill turkey processing plant in Arkansas. Vilsack says the USDA is installing new guidelines for food safety, and stressed the importance of people handling and cooking raw meats properly to protect their families.

Vilsack was joined in Milwaukee this week by Karen Mills, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration; Sharon Bomer, assistant U.S. trade representative for Agricultural Affairs and Commodity Policy; Fred Hochberg, chairman of the Export Import Bank of the United States; and Milwaukee Mayor
Tom Barrett.
