Joe Paterno's Gerald Ford leadership award rescinded

INDIANAPOLIS ? In addition to having wins vacated from his coaching record Monday, the late former head coach Joe Paterno no longer is the recipient of a leadership award that he originally won last year.

Last January, Paterno was presented with the 2011 NCAA President?s Gerald R. Ford Award ? a prize handed out to "an individual who has provided significant leadership as an advocate for intercollegiate athletics on a continuous basis during the course of their career," according to the NCAA.

Donald Remy, the NCAA general counsel and vice president of legal affairs, said Paterno would no longer be considered a recipient of the award as of Monday.

"The Ford award will be taken away [from Paterno's record]," Remy said.

In the 2011 season, Penn State beat Northwestern for, what was at the time officially Paterno's 400th win. However, that victory, along with all other wins by the Penn State football team from the 1998-2011 seasons, were vacated by the NCAA Monday as part of the sanctions handed down against the university.
