Google deal worth nearly $1 billion to Mozilla Foundation

US journalist Kara Swisher has said in a posting on AllThingsD that, according to sources, Mozilla's newly announced deal with Google will yield much greater revenues for the Foundation than in the past. Swisher says that the deal should now yield around $300 million per year over the 2012 to 2014 period. Neither Swisher's sources nor their company affiliations were disclosed and no additional evidence was given to back up the numbers.

In the last reported year of the previous deal, 2010, Google paid nearly $100 million to be the default search option in Firefox, so, if Swisher's sources are correct, the deal will almost triple Mozilla's revenues. This significant increase is, according to the sources, a result of Microsoft also bidding for the default search position in Firefox as part of its attempts to boost the market share of its search engine, Bing. Swisher adds that Yahoo was also involved in the bidding in an effort to halt its declining share of the search market, but the numbers involved were too high.
