I am terrible at math, always have been? any help? | Education ...

Question by Sabi Hellson: I am terrible at math, always have been? any help?
Hello, I am Rebecca.
I am a Junior at a community college and I am absolutely terrible at math. In high school, I had to re-take Algebra 1 over summer, barely passed Geometry and then had to take Algebra 2 twice during my Junior and Senior year; I barely skimmed by with a D.
Per my skill at math, I had to take an Intermediate Algebra course (non-credit) in order to move up to a regular College Algebra class, then onto some other math? but I have attempted and failed the Intermediate Algebra course THREE times.
If I want to take the class again, I must pay out-of-state fees (due to running out of allowed attempts) and it is close to $ 1100. (No, I cannot afford loans? please do not suggest that.)

I have had three tutors over the course of high school and college, but it has truly not been a help in the least. The Professors at the college-level simply do not have the time to help and ask students to go to a ?Math Lab? for help ? I have a full-time job and do not have the time to go to office hours for a Math Lab.

This has been my plan thus far: If I take the CPT (College Placement Test) and pass both the ?Elementary Algebra? and ?College Algebra? portion with a high enough score, they will place me into a regular College Algebra class (no out-of-state fee!)
BUT, I have attempted this test twice and almost passed the second time? my problem is the higher portion of math. When I asked my tutor about what I saw on the test, he said it was Trigonometry ? THAT doesn?t make sense to me in the least; why would they put Trig. on a college algebra portion of the exam?

When I asked him if he was sure, he said he was positive and has been trying to help me understand the higher level math, but I guess there must be something wrong with the way my brain learns.

I feel so helpless when I sit in front of a math problem, try to work it out, feel as though I know what I?m doing? only to find out that I?ve been wrong all along and I don?t understand it one bit.
The answers I?ll get is probably ?Find another tutor? or ?Make time for the math lab? or ?Ask to take a different course? and I?m telling you now that those are not options.
What I don?t understand is why the Board of Education requires these college-level math courses for students not pursuing a degree in anything pertaining to math/science. I am a film student ? I do not need to know 95% of what these math courses are teaching.
My step-father told me he took ?Business Math? courses in high school and college and that?s all you need to know ?in the real world?, not Sine and Tangents. I only wish I could have taken math back when he did ? maybe then, I?d feel like a better person.

Best trick i found for math is always write down what you know, just keep writing down information until you can successfully analyze the information and resolve the problem. Find the gaps that need to be filled and think about ways that you can fill in those gaps with the information you have found. All math is the same their just diversified.
