Man of the Match: In one of the season?s best games, Juan Mata gave one of the campaign?s best individual performances. Two nice second half finishes turned a 2-1 Blues deficit into a 3-2 lead, with a great individual effort to strip Kyle Walker and set up Daniel Sturridge producing the match?s final goal. On a night where Chelsea?s other attackers failed to make their mark, Mata led his team to big derby victory.

Packaged for takeaway:

• Coming off another impressive London derby performance, Chelsea provided more proof that last season?s sixth place finish was an aberration (not part of a trend). They were exactly as good as the final score. Their vulnerability in defense combined with a potency going forward that led to great Saturday morning entertainment.
• How much John Terry?s absence had to do with that vulnerability will be debated (or, perhaps overshadowed by the four goals). The captain started his four-game suspension today, with Gary Cahill sliding into the starting XI. By now, he and partner David Luiz are familiar with each other, which makes it more difficult to explain why Spurs looked to capable of moving through them at any time in the second half.
• In the first half, though, Chelsea was able to dictate how the game was played, getting an early goal from Cahill to take a 1-0 lead into intermission. Though most of the first period, Chelsea held a three-to-two possession advantage.
• Their only goal, however, came on a mistake by William Gallas, whose weak clearance fell right to Cahill just above the circle. The England international volleyed into the top of the goal, giving Brad Friedel (back in the starting XI) no chance to prevent the opener.
• The game changed at halftime. Spurs came out a different team. They dominated play, getting goals from Gallas and Jermain Defoe within nine minutes of the whistle. Though those would be their final goals of the match, they?d go on to outshoot Chelsea 15-6 over the game?s final 45 minutes.
• For Chelsea, however, it was all about execution, converting on three of their last six shots. More accurately, it was all about Juan Mata?s execution. The Spaniard?s equalizer camw off another terrible clearance for Gallas, while the game winning goal featured a nice near-post finish of an Eden Hazard pass, Mata making a good run to get behind Gallas.
• Those defensive breakdowns are going to obscure the fact that Spurs performed relatively well, particularly with Gareth Bale and Moussa Demb?l? unavailable. He both men been at Andre Villas-Boas?s disposal, Spurs may have been able to keep up in a shootout. On Saturday, however, they needed one more threat.?Clint Dempsey and Gylfi Sigurdsson provided minimal contributions.
• Without it, Spurs fell victim to what?s becoming Chelsea?s?modus operandi ? being carried by one of their attackers. Early in the season, it was Eden Hazard. We saw Oscar do it against Juventus. Today, it was Mata. At any point, one of those players can step up, control a game, and lead Chelsea to victory, even when they?re facing the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham.
• Spurs need to get their defense back. They need Younes Kaboul healthy. They need Benoit Assou-Ekotto healthy. They need the ability to bench Gallas or Kyle Walker.
• The only concerns for Chelsea: Their defense and their inability to prove more dangerous with the possession they had in the first half. Will this team always be at its best on the counter, when they can play a game that protects that defense? And if so, will they always be in danger of replicating the Juventus game?

Stem Cells Not Needed for Cancer ? Engineering Evil

Fully developed neurons can revert to stem cell-like states and give rise to brain tumors.

The prevailing view that stem cells are the principle originators of brain cancer may be incorrect, according to a report out today (October 18) in Science.The new study suggests that terminally differentiated brain cells, including neurons, can be reprogrammed by oncogenic factors to become progenitor-like cells that then develop into brain tumors, or gliomas.

?What?s provocative about these experiments is that they challenge the notion that only stem cells can give rise to cancers of the brain,? said David Gutmann, a professor of neurology at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, who did not participate in the study. ?While we were all very excited 10 years ago when the cancer stem cell hypothesis came out, I think it was perhaps wishful thinking for us to believe that that was the only path to cancer.? The researchers were ?able to demonstrate that you can get gliomas from these terminally differentiated neurons,? agreed Ronald DePinho, president of the MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas, Houston. ?[The finding] is very exciting and basically teaches us that cells maintain an extraordinary level of plasticity.?

The potential for multiple cell types to give rise to brain cancer may also account for the variety of glioma subclasses observed, Gutmann added.

Inder Verma, a geneticist at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California made the discovery as part of a larger effort to create mouse models of glioma. The team had injected lentiviral vectors that activated Ras signaling?a pathway that promotes cell growth and division?into the brains of mice that were deficient in the cell cycle protein p53 to induce gliomas.

The cellular origin of these gliomas was unknown, but the researchers assumed the most likely candidates were neural progenitor cells, because such cells are more easily reprogrammable and share many features with cancer cells. In the latest study, however, Verma?s team used an approach to specifically target mature neurons and astrocytes, and found both cell types were able to produce gliomas.

The neuron and astrocyte-derived gliomas expressed high levels of stem and progenitor cell marker proteins. And in vitro studies confirmed that the lentiviral vectors induced differentiated adult brain cells to adopt progenitor like features?similar to those found in neural and induced pluripotent stem cells. Transplanting these reprogrammed cells into receptive mice resulted in tumor growth, confirming the cells were cancerous.

?What we?re saying is, any cell in the brain that gets an oncogenic insult has the ability to dedifferentiate [and form tumors],? said Verma. This might seem a rather bleak outlook, but ?by knowing the mechanism, we at least have a handle to start thinking about [treatments],? Verma said.

Of course, just because differentiated neurons can be induced to give rise to tumors experimentally doesn?t mean the process occurs in human patients, Gutmann pointed out. But Verma and colleagues found evidence to suggest that it might.? An analysis of the molecular profiles of the tumors derived from adult neurons revealed a striking similarity to that of a particularly aggressive subtype of human glioma.? ?It is possible that these human tumors might also have originated from neurons,? said Verma.

The finding also suggested that different cells-of-origin give rise to different types of glioma. ?It?s like German Americans and Italian Americans,? said Gutmann. ?They?re both American citizens but still retain their heritage.? Importantly, he added, those subtle ancestral differences ?may make a huge difference in terms of response to therapy and outcome.?

The Sociology Anthropology Undergraduate Society (SAUS) was getting saucy Thursday night, with two bands ready to get up on the stage at AfterMath, Anth-Soc trivia cards on the table, and a new $3 shot called the Indiana Jones (get it? Because of archaeology?). Needless to say, UFV?s social scientists were pretty happy.

The music was blaring, and the place was filling up. SAUS board members wandered from table to table selling the 50-50 draw. They had a deal ? $10 for the amount of tickets that can be measured from finger tip to fingertip, arms spread out. Good idea in theory, but perhaps they weren?t expecting the giant guy with the wingspan of an albatross sitting with his buddies at the back of the pub.

Students, delighted that they could use what they learned in the classroom in the real world, filled out the trivia cards.

The bands took a while to get on the stage. Daniel Moir and his crew got on first. Moir?s done pretty well as a Canadian musician?from Edmonton?at age 20. He sang some quiet folksy-pop music that smoothed the atmosphere in the darkly-lit pub. CIVL worked the sound. Moir has a very soft, mellow voice that matches his young, boyish face, and he had an honest, almost solemn or shy presence that made him feel pretty authentic.

Between the bands, Sophie Thomas, SAUS president and Caity Therrien, secretary, read out the trivia winners. Of course I didn?t bother guessing the questions ? as an English major, the phrase Homo floresiensis doesn?t ring any bells. Apparently, it?s the smallest human species that ever lived, standing at three feet tall. But, the species is nicknamed ?the hobbit? by anthropologists ? So I think we English majors can mingle with the Anth-Soc types after all.

Those who did guess correct won some cool stuff: gift certificates for shoes at Lady Fern and food at the Roasted Grape (both in downtown Abby), a Storm Brewing hoody and a beach bag filled with goodies. Mr. Albatross and his friends won the 50-50, of course.

This is THE SHOES came on loud and awesomely bluesy. Jereme Collette started off with heavy beats on the kick drum and electric guitar, and Sabrina Robson just blew everyone?s mind with a sexy, husky voice that was so powerful. Robson played the harmonica and smashed the cowbell with equal energy, and Collette rocked his beard (it just made that raw, rough vibe stronger). Robson?s vocals alone could have kept me there.

SAUS president Sophie Thomas was the one who brought forward the idea of bringing them out to Abbotsford; she knew them through her partner?s family. ?I actually met them a few months ago at a wedding, and had got chatting with them,? Thomas explained. ?They were quite keen on getting out to the Valley, so, I had heard them and then I presented the SAUS board members with the music ? that this was a really excellent opportunity, let?s get them out, students will love them ? Jereme was actually an Anthropology student himself so there?s that interesting connection there.

It can?t be denied that This is THE SHOES really made the night. Sophie Thomas said that ?the goal with looking at a band like them was primarily wanting to focus on a local band, somebody related and fun and that was going to be stimulating and enjoyable for the students as well.? It certainly was that!

All in all, SAUS board members were happy with the event. ?It ran smoothly! This was our first pub night, so there were little details we didn?t even think to take into account, like the kitchen closing at 8 p.m., we just assumed that it would be open,? Thomas laughed. ?So that would probably be the one glitch of the night.?

?Other than that, we had tremendous amount of support from Brad at AfterMath and from the SUS board members and from CIVL ? to get us all the information we needed in order to have it run smoothly, so because of that support it went very well.?
