Run Free, Try Bare Foot Running Shoes | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Running is a fantastic hobby that can help you get those endorphins running through your body, while giving you better health. Whether you are running along the road or out on the streets, you need the right kind of shoes. Shoes aren?t just about making it comfortable for you to run on these surfaces, they are about ensuring minimal injury risk and that can only mean getting the best barefoot running shoes, or glove shoes, to aid your hobby.

Taking up running as a hobby, on the streets or cross country requires commitment and the right kind of equipment. The most important gear you need to run are, you guessed it, shoes! But to run fast with superb comfort and safety, you cannot just use any old running shoes, you need the right shoes. To do this, only the best barefoot running shoes will do the job for you. That can only mean one thing ? glove shoes!

Medical practitioners, through extensive research, found out that running barefoot was the best and most efficient way to run. However, due to the surface you plan to run on, barefoot running isn?t possible. Over time, manufacturers have created shoes that are designed to replicate the shape and contours of the human foot, thereby enabling you to get the barefoot-running experience without actually jeopardizing your health.

The best barefoot running shoes come with soles that are a mere 2mm thick in the form of glove shoes designed for the street, while their cross-country versions have a 5mm sole. As compared to the 10 or 12mm thickness of regular running shoes, these soles might seem insufficient but the rugged material and shape ensure that you get the protection you need. This ensures that you can overcome all those surface-related injury-causing obstacles without losing the effectiveness of running barefoot.

If your budget is between $120 and $200, you can get some of the best barefoot running shoes manufactured by companies like Vibram and Zemgear. These companies have gone against the general trends of the market and have produced incredible glove shoes that fit all your running needs. The Vibram Five Fingers, with its five-toe and open-top design is a fantastic model that requires a special mention every time you talk about the best barefoot running shoes.

Buying these glove shoes isn?t just for professionals or those people who are looking to get better at it. It is for anyone who wants to take up running and wants to remain injury-free. Made of simple materials, these shoes are designed to allow your feet to breathe, as it would in barefoot conditions.

Most companies, even the big ones, tend to focus on gimmicks, designs and colors to sell you their running shoes. The kind of technology they use and the shape of their shoes ensure that you are as far from the natural running technique as possible. For those who want to spend most of their time running and not nursing injuries and problems, these glove shoes are truly heaven sent!

Joel Colman is a long-time cross-country runner. He is also an expert on health and fitness. Understand more about foot gloves and five finger shoes by going to Joel?s site.

(AP) ? With centrists becoming few and far between, Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe cited the increasingly polarized climate of Washington in abandoning the U.S. Senate after three terms, giving Democrats new hope of winning the longtime GOP-held seat.

Sometimes criticized as a RINO ? short for Republican in Name Only ? Snowe continued to express as she prepared to end 33 years of public service her desire for the national parties to find middle ground to get things accomplished, saying she was frustrated by "'my way or the highway' ideologies."

Her announcement Tuesday came as shock to both parties, leaving an empty seat, throwing the Senate race into disarray in Maine and dealing an immediate blow to Republicans hoping to take control of the Senate in November.

"It makes this seat one of the top Democratic targets in the country, from not being a Democratic target at all," said Sandy Maisel, director of the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs at Colby College.

While earning a reputation as an independent voice, Snowe became frustrated by the sharp partisanship and gridlock that has come to characterize the upper chamber recently. She was the only Republican who voted for a version of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, joining Democrats and casting a vote for the plan in the Senate Finance Committee.

She said she wanted the bill to go the Senate floor, where it could be changed, before she ultimately voted against it. But she came under intense criticism from conservatives.

"As I have long said, what motivates me is producing results for those who have entrusted me to be their voice and their champion, and I am filled with that same sense of responsibility today as I was on my first day in the Maine House of Representatives," Snowe said in a statement. "I do find it frustrating, however, that an atmosphere of polarization and 'my way or the highway' ideologies has become pervasive in campaigns and in our governing institutions."

Her frustrations with partisanship and polarization are not new.

Discussing being one of a shrinking number of Republicans in the Senate in an April 2009 interview with The Associated Press, Snowe declared, "It's not healthy for the country to have parties with polar opposite views without that bridge that you need to build consensus."

"Ultimately, we're heading to having the smallest political tent in history, the way events have been unfolding. If the Republican Party fully intends to become a majority party in the future, it must move from the far right back toward the middle," she said later that same month when Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter defected to the Democratic party.

Obama said her career shows what can be done when both parties work together.

"From her unwavering support for our troops, to her efforts to reform Wall Street, to fighting for Maine's small businesses, Senator Snowe's career demonstrates how much can be accomplished when leaders from both parties come together to do the right thing for the American people," Obama said in a statement.

Democratic U.S. Sen. John Kerry and Republican U.S. Senator Scott Brown, both of Massachusetts, praised her for reaching across the aisle.

"She comes from a line of moderate Republicans from John Chafee to John Heinz that made really working across the aisle a virtue," Kerry said. "It's been really sad to see that virtue derided in so many Republican primaries the last couple years."

Said Brown, who is facing a fierce re-election challenge: "We all are going to miss her independence and her ability to build bridges on some of the toughest issues."

Snowe, 65, is in good health and for months had been laying the groundwork for a strong re-election effort, putting together a campaign team, keeping a busy schedule of events in the state and raising campaign money. She had more than $3.3 million in her campaign account at the end of last year, her last campaign finance report showed.

She spent more than a year working to beat back a tea party challenge, shifting her positions to the right in some cases and spending considerable time allaying the concerns of conservatives in Maine.

Her exit could boost Democrats who are facing tough odds this election cycle. Senate Democrats hold a 51-47 majority with two independents who caucus with them.

Already there were four Democrats running for Snowe's seat, but the vacancy changes everything. Maine Democratic officials were speaking privately with the state's two Democratic members of Congress, U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree. Michaud issued a statement saying he was "seriously considering" a run.

Candidates have only until March 15 to collect the 2,000 signatures necessary to qualify for the November ballot.

Snowe was facing her first primary fight after cruising to a third term in 2006 with 74 percent of the vote. She was viewed by some as vulnerable because of her moderate position at a time when the tea party was gaining influence in Maine. But she remained popular with both Republicans and Democrats. Maisel described her as virtually unbeatable.

Snowe is married to former Maine Gov. John McKernan. She was widowed at 26 when her first husband, state Rep. Peter Snowe, died in a car crash. She won a 1973 election to fill his vacant seat. Five years later, she was elected to the U.S. House where she served for 16 years before winning her Senate seat.

She said she was confident she would have won re-election, but saw a "vital need for the political center in order for our democracy to flourish and to find solutions that unite rather than divide us." She said she sees opportunities to build support for that change from outside the Senate, though she did not elaborate.

"To this day, I remain deeply passionate about public service, and I cherish the opportunity I have been given for nearly four decades to help improve the lives of my fellow Mainers," she said.

Last week, one of her GOP challengers dropped out of the primary race, choosing to run as an independent, leaving Scott D'Amboise as the only other GOP candidate in the race unless other Republicans decide to toss their hats into the ring.

Snowe's decision makes her the third U.S. senator from Maine in the past two decades to voluntarily relinquish a seat to which they could have won re-election. Democratic Sen. George Mitchell chose not to run in 1994 and Republican Sen. William Cohen did likewise in 1996.

Mitchell, who praised Snowe's public service and friendship, joked that he was once advised not to overstay his welcome. "A guy from Maine told me this: It's better to leave when we want you to stay, rather than after we want you go to," he said.

How To Tackle The Goal Setting Problem Nobody Talks About ...

Elephant in the room

?I discovered at an early age that all I?ve ever wanted to do is design?

Jonathan Ive in his New Year Honours press release

It makes me want to puke.

On reading this you will have had one of two reactions ? you?ll either have nodded along because you, too, have always known what you wanted to do and discovered it early.

Or it edged you closer to despair because finding your passion is like playing hunt-the-thimble in a game rigged by a particularly perverse game master.

Guess what? Yet another post from a celebrity who effortlessly discovered their passion and went on to pursue it with great success. You could be forgiven for wondering whether you missed out on the ?passion-finding gene?. And you?re not alone.

All the evidence shows that people who know what they want are more likely to get what they want. After all, if you don?t know what you want, you will end up working for someone who does. Without your own agenda you will spend the best part of your youth and energy delivering someone else?s agenda.

What also seems true is people who do manage to know what they want possess a kind of ?inner compass? allowing them to make decisions and change their circumstances to move nearer to it.

Why then is it so rare?

There are myriad goal-setting books on the market and an equal number of goal-setting systems, each with its own fans. Much of this ignores the plain truth ? most people, when you ask them, don?t know what they want. Goals, beyond a daily to-do list, are a hazy concept for most. An even greater mass of people have not made it as far as using an effective to-do list.

For all the talk of outcome orientation there is very little of it out there. We are drowning in advice and yet, aside from a tiny minority, most people don?t set goals and this year will pass pretty much like last year.

I have always found this fascinating. There appears to be a complete disconnection between the standard self-help, personal improvement, creativity mantra (I call it ?Knowing and Going?) and the daily reality of working with clients who remain not only clueless but stuck because they are unable to work it out.

Test it for yourself. Next time you start a meeting try asking people why they are there and what they want to walk away with? Watch as they duck and run for cover. Hard to believe I know, but most folk who trundle along to meetings do not know why they are there and cannot say what they want to leave with.

If something is not yet done it comes down to one of two problems:

  • Either you know what you want but don?t know how to get it
  • Or, you don?t know what you want

It?s people with the first problem who are writing and reading all those articles and books on success and change. They more or less know what they want but need a tool, technique or advice to help them get it. These folk seem unaware they are part of a very small group. They also assume the second problem is easy ? you just think of it and then go for it. You know and go.

This is all fine, until you begin talking to people with the second problem. That?s when you find it?s a real problem and for many it strangles change at birth. There is almost nothing out there to help these folk.

Unfortunately the people writing all those self-help/productivity/creativity blogs don?t understand this. They assume all you have to do is ?work out what you want? or ?know what you want? and you can skip to the next step in their pet system. But what if you don?t? What if you can?t get past step one because nothing you think of seems to ignite your passion?

Is any of this familiar?

  • You know what you don?t want but struggle to be clear about what you do want.
  • You could do almost anything but you end up doing almost nothing because you lack the certainty to pick something.
  • You don?t like where you are but can?t figure out where you should be.
  • You know you are holding yourself back but you are not sure from what.
  • You have let others make the bigger decisions about your life; you suspect you might be coasting.
  • You carry around a vague but pressing feeling there is something else for you, if only you could know what it is.
  • When asked what you want, your mind goes blank or your heart starts racing. It scares you.
  • You?re facing a big decision and you don?t know what to do, or you have a feeling you might know but are afraid of the answer.
  • You?re scared of making the changes you know you could be making.
  • Somehow, you know your life would be different if only you could work out what you wanted.

Congratulations, you have the second problem ? you can?t ?go? because you don?t ?know?.

I?ve spent years helping clients get past this and collecting tools to help with just the first step ? working out what you really want. Last year, I put the best of them into a book, First, Know What You Want ? Why Goals Don?t Work and How to Make Them. Inside you?ll find twelve practical experiments in finding your ?inner compass?, whether you?re the analytical type or more intuitive. And some bonus tips on using these techniques with others.

Here are a couple to get you started:

1. Start with What You DON?T Want

Unless you are a highly motivated, goal-seeking machine who uses positive language all the time, the chances are you spend at least some of the time thinking about things you don?t like and don?t want. Some of us are really good at this, so good that when someone asks What do you want? it takes us by surprise and we get a bit flustered.

Make it easy for yourself and start where you are ? with what you don?t want. Pick something right now that you don?t want in your job, career, future, art, or relationship. Got something? Now ask What do I want, instead?

What you want is not always the opposite of what you don?t want:

I don?t want to breathe recycled air all day.

What do you want instead?

I?ve always wanted to work near the sea or I?d like to be hotter during the day or whatever that little ?instead? unlocks for you.

If What do you want? is the most powerful question you can ask, What do you want, instead? is probably the second most powerful question.

First you go with your natural focus ? the moan, the irritation, the thing you don?t like. Then ask yourself What do I want [pause] instead? To answer you will have to glance in some other direction, searching around until you find an alternative.

2. Stop Thinking and Come to Your Senses

Instead of using your head to tease out what you want, why not ask your senses? They have a pretty good idea of what pleases them, but they talk slowly, like your uncle who takes forever to get to the point.

Often we numb or ignore our senses because we are moving through our lives too fast and it is annoying to have to slow down and pay attention to them. It is a bit like taking a toddler for a walk. The little one keeps wanting to go in different directions and stopping to investigate interesting things.

Hurry up, hurry up you cry to your senses, pulling on the leash. It?s no wonder they stop talking to you after a while. In your senses lie some powerful clues about what you want.

Mike came to see me facing a job change and uncertain about what he wanted next. After getting nowhere for a while I asked him what his favourite smell was. He thought for a moment. ?It?s my daughter?s hair, just after she has had a bath and is having a bedtime drink.?

When I asked him how often he got to enjoy that smell and how he could enjoy it more, he began to well up. ?I?ve been so busy with work in the last few months I can?t remember the last time.?

What?s your favourite smell? was enough to help Mike get to the heart of what he wanted from work and family. Could your senses help you gain some clarity too?

What do you enjoy looking at?

What would you love to hear more of?

What do you like to touch (or be touched by)?

What do you love to taste?

And your favourite smell? Could it contain a clue about what you want?

We have somehow confused adulthood with having less physical pleasure in our working day but it?s totally OK to devise a life that pleasures your senses (in case you were wondering).

If nothing else is working why not stop thinking and come to your senses?

What Else Do You Want to Know about Goal-Setting?

With Mark?s permission I?ll come back and share some other tips for knowing what you want. Let me know in the comments whether you want to hear more.

If you have discovered what you really wanted, what was the secret, the trigger point for you? Please share.

If you are yet to find your inner compass, let me know whether some tips would be helpful.

Aspirin use may moderate harmful effects of trans fat consumption

New research shows an increased risk of ischemic stroke in postmenopausal women who consume higher amounts of trans fatty acids, commonly found in baked goods, fried foods, and packaged products. Study findings now available in Annals of Neurology, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American Neurological Association and Child Neurology Society, suggest aspirin use may moderate the stroke risk caused by a diet high in trans fats.

Ischemic stroke is a result of a blockage in an artery leading to the brain. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), 795,000 people have a new or recurrent stroke in the U.S. each year. Reports from the AHA indicate that stroke is the fourth cause of death in the U.S., killing more than 137,000 Americans each year with 60% of those deaths in women. Previous research suggests that increased incidence of cardiovascular diseaseone of the risk factors for strokeis associated with trans fat consumption. However, in other prior studies no significant association was found between dietary fat intake and stroke.

In the largest study of stroke in postmenopausal women to date, Dr. Ka He and colleagues analyzed data from the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study (WHI-OS)a prospective cohort study of 87,025 women between the ages 50 and 79 who are generally in good health. At the time of enrollment participants were given a self-administered food frequency questionnaire and again three years later to assess their diet. The questionnaire asked about frequency of intake and portion size for 122 goods and food groups during a 3-month period and included questions related to fat consumption from meat, dairy, cooking, and reduced fat food items.

Results show 1,049 incident cases of ischemic stroke over 663,041 person-years of follow-up. Women who had the highest trans fat intake (6.1 grams/day) had a 39% greater incidence of stroke compared to those who consumed less (2.2 grams/day). Researchers found no significant associations between total fat, other types of fat, or dietary cholesterol. Aspirin use was shown to reduce the association between trans fat intake and stroke.

Additionally, researchers determined that of the ischemic stroke cases, there were 101 atherotherombotic, 234 cardioembolic and 269 lacunar infarctions, with another 445 unspecified cases that were not included in the subtype analysis. After adjusting for clinical, lifestyle and dietary factors results showed trans fat intake was associated with a higher risk of lacunar infarction.

"Our findings confirm that postmenopausal women with higher trans fat intake had an elevated risk of ischemic stroke, but aspirin use may reduce the adverse effects," concludes Dr. He. "We recommend following a diet low in trans fat and adding an aspirin regimen to help women reduce their risk of stroke, specifically following the onset of menopause."
