Bit Slap: How much is a video game worth? | Heave Media

Near the end of pay periods at work, I gaze at my bank account while a strong sense of wanting to kill myself pervades my soul. The number inches ever closer to zero while the hole in my heart has still not been filled with enough stuff. Then I see a new game is released and I curse the price of games these days. I imagine myself sitting in a rocking chair telling youngsters that in my day we didn?t have the fancy Internet but games cost pennies and we had to make them last. Ok, maybe not pennies, but surely games back in my day were cheaper. So off to the Internet I went to prove my point, and I found out how much of an ignorant fool I really am. But this research got me thinking ? What is a video game really worth?

Let?s take a look at the results of my minutes of research on game prices. I came across this nifty graph on 1UP that listed Final Fantasy II (IV), my favoritest game ever, as costing $69.99 when it was released in 1992. Ok, that was a bit more than I had remembered. But hell, my FFXIII-2 collectors edition was $80 so I still win! Then I saw the after-inflation prices. For those of you without a degree in economics, inflation is a process by which you realize your parents should have gone bankrupt feeding your game addiction. Also something about adjusting prices to what they would be today. Final Fantasy II (IV) jumped up to a $113.57. Well that?s something. Oh, Streets of Rage II, that game that people are complaining about paying a couple bucks to download? Try paying just shy of a hundred dollars for a chance to beat up street gangs for an hour. As for console pricing, well, I still can?t afford a Neo Geo at $993.65. Thank you for existing, Virtual Console. I admit, games are actually cheaper nowadays than they were in my youth. So how do I know if a game is actually worth my money? For me, it comes down to two factors: Cost over the duration of time I play the game, and the lasting impact of the game.

After I?m done with a game, I mean truly completely done where it goes back on my shelf never to see the light of day, I do this little math equation to determine the surface worth of the game. It?s really simple. I divide the cost of the game by the hours I spent playing it. Let?s say, for example, I spent 17 hours on Uncharted 3. Not being big into multiplayer and not having the time to return for treasure hunting, I declare myself finished with the game (I actually stand up and say ?I am finished with you!?). I paid $60 for the game so I divide 60 by 17 and arrive at $3.52 per hour of entertainment. If that dollar amount us under five bucks I consider the game ?worth it? from a financial standpoint. I figure I?ll spend ten bucks on a two hour movie so a game should offer me the same if not larger bang for my bucks. This also works for games I play once and never return to. Maybe I played Musashi: Samurai Legend for a grand total of an hour and spent $20 on it. Well then clearly the game wasn?t financially worth it. Does that mean I wasted my money? Nope, because a game?s worth exceeds past the financial investment, at least in my opinion.

Before we move on to defining worth beyond price, let?s apply this exercise to gaming consoles. Everyone was up in arms that the PS3 cost $600 at release. Yeah, I?ll admit, that?s a huge chunk of change, just as the PS2 was when it came out at $300. Funny story, I emptied my saving accounts when I was 16 and ditched school to purchase a PS2 on launch day. The parental units were not happy. I use my PS3 as my primary Blu-ray player, to stream movies, play games, chat with friends, workout, and so on and so on. ?Let?s do some math. I bought a launch PS3 for $600, then had to pay a repair fee of $150 when it broke and was out of warranty. Then I picked up a slim model for $300. So my total investment in a PS3 console (let?s ignore controllers) was $1050. Now let?s say I use my PS3 an average of 2 hours a day. That?s roughly 5 and a half years, or 2007 days. Using my insanely simple formula my PS3 has given be entertainment to the tune of 26 cents an hour. Think about that. That?s less than I pay to save those animals Sarah McLachlan guilted me into sponsoring. Think about that number the next time you?re debating a game/console purchase.

This works all well and good for traditional games, but what about for casual games like Angry Birds or MMOs? This is where things get a bit more complicated, but it will act as the bridge between monetary worth and deeper value. I paid a buck for Angry Birds on my Kindle. So no matter what I should be happy, right? I can?t justify spending sixty dollars on the game, but I play it every morning on the train ride to work. I have been ingrained with this idea that casual games should be way cheaper than consoles games. I think this is because casual games are not about an experience, they?re about a distraction, a way to pass time. It is this view that impacts my cost analysis. If I pay five bucks for a Kindle game, you?d better be damn sure it distracts me for many a commute.

MMOs on the other hand swing into the opposite direction. They have an ongoing cost for an ongoing experience. Provided new content is being released, you have to weight the cost long term. Fifteen dollars a month is a small price to pay for 30 hours of gaming each month, but for one or two log-ins maybe you should invest in Skyrim. As for free MMOs, it asks you to place a monetary value on the game. I never paid to play the Shin Megami MMO but I did buy a membership to DC Universe Online. One grabbed me, one was a casual distraction (and we know how I see casual distractions). So there are times when my cost analysis is super effective in determining how much I?ll pay for a game.

Cost is one thing, but what about a game?s impact? If the only value video games had were financial I?d have given up the expensive hobby a long, long time ago. For me at least, games have an inherent value in my life that no equation could calculate. As I mentioned above, Final Fantasy IV is my favorite game of all time. I?ve bought and re-bought copies of it and will continue to do so as they release new iterations. Why? Because of the value it holds in my life. Final Fantasy IV was the game that got me into RPGs, it was the first game that created a dialogue about games among myself and my friends. It was because of that love that I bought a Playstation for Final Fantasy VII, that I discovered online gaming journalism in my hunt for FFVIII information. It lead to my reading of a preview for Final Fantasy X in an issue of Electronic Gaming Monthy that inspired me to actually WRITE about games. Other games hold similar value. Zelda II was the first game I broke a controller over. Mischief Makers showed me that games could be wacky and awesome. The first Mortal Kombat ignited my Nintendo fanboy rage when I had to defend the lack of blood to my Sega-owning peers. I could go on and on. Even games I hated still hold value, because they taught me what I wanted in a game, flaws I could forgive and those I couldn?t. In many ways, games shape us in the same way that people shape us. Yes, on a smaller scale, but we are the sum of our experiences, and 40 hours invested in a game is an experience. Take a few minutes and think of your favorite game. Think WHY it is your favorite game. I can guarantee the reasons are far deeper than great graphics or a solid storyline. Great games, like music, movie, books, and television impact us long after we put down the controller. Therein lies the non-monetary value of your games.

What have we learned from this little exercise? Firstly, I clearly have too much time on my hands. But more importantly, games are worth the value we ascribe to them. Maybe we want a fifty hour adventure or perhaps we want a couple hours of flinging birds at pigs. All games have worth, but it?s up to you to decide how you define it.

Answer:?The term ?townhouse? is often used to describe side by side common wall units which may or may not be condominiums. The definition of a condominium is about how real estate is held: All condo owners own or lease an undivided interest in all real estate. In non-condo HOAs, owners share an undivided interest in common real estate plus an individual interest in real estate below their unit or home.

Since the essence of a condominium is related to real estate and not the structure, a condo can be a single or multi-level unit, a house, commercial space or even an airplane hangar. The key legal difference between a townhouse and a condo is whether the owner owns land separately from commonly held land. You can?t tell just by looking at it. You need to read the governing documents. This is extremely important when buying because it often affects maintenance and insurance responsibilities. Don?t count on your real estate agent to know the difference.

Ginger Snap Crafts: GE {lighting} room makeover #GELighting

I was recently asked to do a room makeover using GE Lighting!
Now that sounded like a fun challenge!? Lighting is HUGE!!!
Sometimes changing the lighting in a room can change the whole atmosphere!?
Annnd I had the perfect room in mind that needed a little something?my kitchen!
So I headed to Walmart to pick up the things I needed for my makeover!

As usual Walmart did not disappoint!?
It?s shelves were stocked full of lighting choices!
So much to choose from!?
I LOVED all the options from GE Lighting.???
Lots has changed since the last time I went shopping for light bulbs!

So here?s the run down on what I wanted to change in our kitchen.? We have a very long kitchen.? We have plenty of light coming in on one end.? Our table sits right in front of our patio doors & a window so during the day we get lots of natural light, but at night it?s a different story!? The light fixtures in our kitchen were waaaay too small.? So at night it was dark!? So I wanted to change that up!? We also had out dated light bulbs that were not energy efficient!? Not good!? I am all about saving some money.? So it was time to swap out those old bulbs for some new energy efficient ones!?

So here is what it looked like before:

I picked up some GE LED decorative candle bulbs for our chandelier.? I also picked up some GE Reveal light bulbs.? What I LOVED about both of these bulbs was that they looked like normal bulbs!? I?m not a huge fan of the swirly twirly type bulbs, so I was super excited about their design!? They are suppose to last 7+ years, too!? Yay!

Walmart also carries light fixtures, but I couldn?t find the exact one I wanted so on the way home we swung by a home improvement store, & I found a track lighting fixture that was a perfect match to the lights we already have.? So we grabbed that.? I knew that with the combination of the new bulbs & more lighting it was going to be AWESOME!?
I couldn?t wait to get home & put my hubby to work!? {Thanks, honey! You?re the best!}?

Now if I can just get my kiddos to remember to turn their lights off when they leave a room & to close the door when they go outside we?d be doing even better!

Invoice Financing for Business Cash flow

If you are in business and want increase your finances but are unwilling to pay the high interests rates required from the regular methods of borrowing money like bank loans and overdrafts, then you might consider using invoice financing. So what is Invoice financing you may ask? Invoice Finance or factoring simply refers to the technique of raising cash against your business invoices using a reputable finance company that is normally referred to as the factoring company. It is particularly useful if your company is thinking of increasing the assets investment or looking to acquire stocks but lacks sufficient resources.
This method requires the Company to allocate its client invoices and outsource the running and debt management of its sales ledger to the factoring company. Money is then raised against debts owed by clients through invoice which in turn increases cash flow. In this technique, Debtors are used as the security of the lender and the borrower company stands to receive up to 80% if the debts or invoices are approved. With invoice financing, the cash flow of your business will be improved as you do not have to undergo the usual delay that is linked to invoice payment. This in turn gives you the chance to boost working capital while at the same time making sure your company has enough cash flow to run sufficiently. Consequently, when you have access to money that is owed to your company you will be more competitive and your business will grow further.

When you use invoice finance for your business you save valuable company time which you can use to concentrate on other productive matters in the business. This is because it relieves you from the administrative burden of managing your invoices while additionally you will be able to save overhead costs since you do not need to hire people to recover payments as this is catered for by the factoring company. In addition a factoring company unlike banks and other financial institutions will not require you provide strong financial and tangible assets. Instead they heavily rely on the financial strength of your client and their ability to pay.

However, you should be very careful and alert while selecting the company for invoice factoring. This is because some invoice factoring companies may use harsh words or employ unacceptable means of obtaining their money from your clients. You should find a company that is interested in maintaining the good relationship between you and your client and has the ability to deal with any problems that may arise in a sensible manner .If you establish a good working relationship with an invoice factoring company and conduct several transactions with them, then you can rest assured that?they will put the interests of your business as well as your clients first.

Fancy App Review: Pinterest for Shoppers

(The Root) -- Oh, how people just absolutely?love?Pinterest! The content-sharing service has exploded in popularity to the tune of a $1.5 billion valuation in May. The only problem is that if you see something you like and it's not on the actual retailers' pinboard, you can't actually?buy?it.?

Fancy, a website and mobile app for iPad, iPhone and Android devices,?is a hot alternative for users who want to catalog things they love and shop for them at the same time. Users sign up via their Facebook, Twitter or email account and browse various categories, from men's products to workplace items, just as they would using Pinterest.?

By clicking on an icon that's shaped like an ice cream pop, you can "Fancy" items you, well ... fancy, adding them to your organized lists of other, similar objects. However, if you click on an item's image, a link opens that allows you to add the item to your shopping cart for purchase. Or you can opt to share the product via email with friends, find similarly colored items or check a box that lets your Fancy friends know that you already own it.

Fancy's interface, though, is nowhere near as slick as Pinterest's.?Items are organized in a single-column format, as opposed to Pinterest's inviting, multicolumn design. Also, if you're uploading something to Fancy from your computer, you have to enter the purchasing information yourself.?

Still, the ability to just "click and buy" is a big selling point for Fancy (at least until Pinterest adds its own e-commerce feature), as are a slew of celebrity kudos.?Last week Oscar de la Renta wound up selling five of its baseball-T-shirt-inspired green-and-white sequined silk sweaters, which retail for $2,400 a pop. Kanye West, Diddy and Ashton Kutcher have also either invested in or endorsed the site.?With some tweaks, Fancy could provide some stiff competition for Pinterest, but it may be an uphill climb.?

Lipshaw: Don't Blame Faculty for Legal Education's Problems

I've started working on an essay for a symposium on the future of legal education ... I decided to re-read a work I have cited in the past, Donald A. Sch?n's The Reflective Practitioner: How Professionals Think in Action.?

All professions, in?Sch?n's view, demonstrate this tension between rigor (of research in technical disciplines) and relevance (of the application of knowledge to practice). ... The role of legal academy scholarship in practice falls somewhere in between the role of research in laporscopic surgical practice and the role of research in barbering practice. I will leave others to speculate on precisely where it falls. But in terms of how much pure or applied university-based research we actually need, I have a feeling our profession is closer to barbers than surgeons. ...??

Nevertheless, demonizing law professors in modal schools (the vast majority of which take seriously their obligation to train lawyers for non-academic careers) is like demonizing bankers or CEOs. It scratches an atavistic urge to attribute misfortunate to the gods. ... I don't particularly care for the U.S. tort system and its effect on product and medical costs, but attributing the crisis of legal education to current law professors because they get paid well or write theoretical "law and ..." articles is like attributing defensive medicine to the plaintiffs' medical malpractice bar because of the standard one-third contingent fee. People naturally do what they get measured on and paid well for. ?And it's perfectly legal to boot.

In short, blaming law faculty for responding precisely to the incentives the system creates is understandable but unreflective in its own way. Rather, the current problem is institutional and structural, as Brian Tamanaha, the late Larry Ribstein, Bill Henderson, and others have observed. Because of regulatory and accreditation restraints, almost all schools are similarly modal, so almost every law school, even well down in the lower rankings, consists of faculty with the same career drivers and motivations.

If one's school can't support and doesn't need a Department of Jurisprudence alongside the history, sociology, economics, and philosophy departments, maybe it shouldn't have one. Going that route would take some real cojones, and no doubt create more human candidates for status as gods or demons.

BMW is in the midst of launching its new generation of 7 Series flagship sedan and the lineup will include the BMW ActiveHybrid 7. This new 2013 hybrid 7 series will combine an inline 6-cylinder engine with a hybrid powertrain.

This latest evolutionary step uses BMW?s 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine. It is the same 315-horsepower version as in the new 2013 BMW 740Li and replaces the V8 engine previously used in the ActiveHybrid 7.

Other hybrid components include a 55-horsepower synchronous electric motor, hybrid-spec 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, a lithium ion high-performance battery and power electronics which run the intelligent energy management.

BMW?s goal was to give the ActiveHybrid 7 an outstanding balance between performance and efficiency. With combined output of 349 horsepower and peak torque of 367 pound-feet, the new BMW ActiveHybrid 7 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds (preliminary). At the same time, it delivers significantly improved fuel efficiency. U.S. EPA numbers are not yet available; however, in the EU test cycle the new ActiveHybrid 7 yields efficiency gains of 14 percent over the new 740Li which itself sees an improvement over its predecessor.

A host of innovative features enhance the car?s dynamics and ensure optimum efficiency of the hybrid drive system. For example, the electric motor provides an extra 155 lb-ft of torque through the boost function if the driver should need a quick sprint or to call on strong mid-range acceleration. ECO PRO mode, with coasting function and proactive analysis, prepares the drive system in advance for upcoming situations on the road. Brake Energy Regeneration and the Hybrid Start-Stop system also work together to maximize overall efficiency.

The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 can also run purely on electric power. If the hybrid battery has sufficient charge and the driver goes easy on the accelerator, the car can cover a distance of up to 2.5 miles almost silently and without producing any tailpipe emissions. The top speed on electric power alone is 37 mph.

The new ActiveHybrid 7 will be available in the U.S. as a long-wheelbase model only.

All new BMW 7 Series models come equipped with Auto Start-Stop which can cut fuel consumption by up to six percent as well as Brake Energy Regeneration. When the singer debuted his tune?on performance night of finale week, judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez gave him a standing ovation. Randy declared that "everything about that was perfect," J.Lo told him that there was nothing like it on the radio today, and the Aerosmith rocker said he heard "a little Paul Simon" in it.

According to Billboard, "Home," which hit No. 2 on its first chart appearance, was also the week's biggest debut and is also the fourth biggest of the year. For 2012's most impressive bows, Justin Bieber, Maroon 5 and Katy Perry lead the pack.

That's not bad company for the new "Idol" champ to keep!

LONDON -- A former spokesman for Britain?s prime minister was?detained by police on Wednesday amid allegations he committed perjury while working as a tabloid editor for Rupert Murdoch ? a move that brings the phone-hacking scandal closer to the heart of government.

Andy Coulson, who worked as David Cameron's director of communications, was held in London by detectives investigating claims he committed perjury during a high-profile court case in Scotland involving a politician accused of taking part in adulterous, drug-fueled sex orgies at swingers' clubs.

Coulson, 44, was being transferred north from London to Glasgow, Scotland, for questioning on Wednesday, according to Britain?s Sky News.

Strathclyde Police issued a statement that said: "Officers from Strathclyde Police's Operation Rubicon team detained a 44-year-old man in London this morning under section 14 of the Criminal Procedure Scotland Act 1995 on suspicion of committing perjury before the High Court in Glasgow."

Coulson resigned from his job as the Cameron?s chief spin doctor in January 2011 amid growing public anger over the phone-hacking scandal.

Now he is implicated in another long-running saga ? that of Tommy Sheridan, a lawmaker and icon of left-wing Scottish politics.

Earlier this month, Coulson appeared in front of an ongoing inquiry into press standards where he revealed he still held shares in Murdoch?s News Corp. while working as working as Cameron?s director of communications.

Facebook Working on Smartphone?

Facebook continues to beef up its mobile strategy - just last week it launched a dedicated Facebook camera app and it has recently acquired mobile app companies, including Instagram and Glancee. But according to The New York Times, Facebook is aiming bigger than apps that run on the iPhone or Android phones. It might just release its own smartphone.

According to the New York Times' anonymous sources, Facebook is preparing to release a phone by next year.

"The company has already hired more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the?iPhone, and one who worked on the?iPad, the employees and those briefed on the plans said," Nick Bilton of the New York Times reported on Sunday.

Previously other technology sites have reported similar Facebook phone speculation. In 2010, TechCrunch reported that Facebook was looking to create its own phone. Late last year, AllThingsD reported that a phone codenamed "Buffy" was being tested. The Times now reports that Facebook continues to work on the "Buffy" phone and has hired numerous hardware engineers, many of which are former Apple employees. According to the Times' sources, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg doesn't want Facebook to be just another app that runs on a phone.

Facebook would not comment directly on the statement and instead?referred?the Times ?to a previous statement.?"We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers."?Last year, HTC released the HTC Status, an Android phone that offered a deeper Facebook experience with dedicated Facebook buttons.

According to? Facebook's IPO filing, out of its total?825 million users, 488 million actively accessed Facebook's mobile products in March. And with that, you can see why a Facebook phone might seem pretty appealing to the newly public company.

LONDON - The parents of six children killed in an arson attack on their home in Britain were arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday.

Mick Philpott, 55, and his wife Mairead, 31, were detained in connection with the attack on the house in Derby, in the English Midlands.

The victims, whose ages ranged from 13 to five, died after the blaze at the house in Victory Road, Allenton, on May 11.

Derbyshire Police said a 55-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman from Derby were arrested on Tuesday morning but did not name them.

'Crucial information'
Jade Philpott, 10, and brothers John, nine, Jack, seven, Jessie, six, and Jayden, five, all perished in the blaze, while Duwayne Philpott, 13, died of his injuries in Birmingham Children's Hospital two days' later.

In a statement, Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill said: ?I suspect there may still be people with crucial information who have not yet come forward to speak to us.

?In view of the arrests, I would urge anyone who may have been holding back, not felt comfortable to voice their concerns or not had the confidence, to do so now. They have my personal reassurance that we will deal with their information sensitively.

?We still need information to help us in this inquiry. The latest arrests are just one step further in the investigation. It is absolutely vital that if you know anything you think could help us, come forward now, do not wait any longer. It is important that we find justice for these six young children.?

A 28-year-old woman and 38-year-old man, both from Derby, were arrested earlier this month on suspicion of murder but were later released without charge, police said.?

Skin Cancer Prevention Recommendations, CDC Data Affirm Need for

Just as the AAFP and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) were updating their 2003 guidelines for prevention of skin cancer earlier this month -- issuing final recommendations to counsel fair-skinned individuals between the ages of 10 and 24 years about minimizing their exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation -- data published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) indicate that the message may be needed now more than ever.A data analysis on the use of indoor tanning devices published May 11 in MMWR, says "the highest rates of indoor tanning were found among young women, particularly white women aged 18-25 years," with nearly 58 percent of that group reporting that they had tanned indoors 10 or more times in the past year. Among all white adult women who reported tanning indoors, the average number of sessions per year was 20.3. That number jumped to nearly 28 sessions per year in women ages 18-21.

"UV radiation levels from indoor tanning devices far exceed those from sunlight," said the report's authors. "The high frequency of use among indoor tanners is of great concern given these high levels of UV radiation and the elevated risk for skin cancer with increasing numbers of sessions."

According to a CDC press release, young adults continue to increase their risk for developing skin cancer, despite data that suggest overexposure to UV light causes cancer.

Family physicians in particular can help these younger patients, according to the clinical summary for the new USPSTF recommendations. The summary suggests that behavioral counseling in a primary care setting that emphasizes cancer prevention or appearance-focused messages, such as stressing the aging effect of UV radiation on the skin, can reduce UV exposure, including indoor tanning, among people ages 10-24 years.

"In young women, the most likely group to indoor-tan, appearance-focused behavioral interventions reduced indoor tanning behavior by up to 35 percent," the authors said. "Given the high prevalence of indoor tanning among young adult women, an increased focus should be placed on this population to prevent melanoma from increasing significantly as this generation ages."

Any potential benefit of such counseling for older patients is less clear, however, leading the USPSTF and the AAFP to state in their May 8 prevention recommendations that current evidence is "insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of counseling adults older than age 24 years about minimizing risks to prevent skin cancer."
